“Be safe,” she ordered, already looking worried.

“Always.” He turned at the last minute and said something he should has said long ago. “I love you, sugar.”

Chapter 28

Leo loved her.

“Holy shit,” Jazz breathed, the words surprisingly loud in the now empty room.

To say she was shocked at the turn of events was an understatement. When she’d popped into the station with some goodies, she’d expected it to be like every other time she’d visited. Leo asking her to move in with him and saying I love you was not on her bingo card.

“Holeeeeeeshit!” she giggled, struggling to keep inthe exuberant laughter that wanted to break free. She was so happy it felt as if her heart was about to pound right out of her chest.

Gathering up her stuff, she hurried out of the station with her keys in one hand and her phone in the other. There were a million things she needed to get done, but first she had a call to make.

“Leo asked me to move in,” she yelled the moment Winter answered.

“Wait, what?”

“Were you sleeping?”

“Maybeeee…”

“This isn’t the time to be sleeping, Winter! Leo asked me to move in with him.”

“And you said yes, of course,” her best friend guessed with a laugh.

“I sure did,” she breathed, ridiculously happy. “We have to start figuring things out because Leo wants it to happen sooner rather than later.”

“Sounds familiar,” her bestie hummed. “Will was the same way.”

“Do you know what you want to do with your old furniture?”

“We can get it cleared out on Will’s next day off,” Winter told her. “I’d offer him up today but he’s off with his brothers. Next week, okay?”

“Sounds perfect. Are you free tonight?” she asked, an idea coming to her as she drove past their favorite pizza place. “Leo’s on shift so we can have one last hurrah at the old place before it gets emptied out.”

“Yessss,” her friend cheered. “Will’s gone overnight so that’s perfect. What time?”

“I’m only about ten minutes away so whenever you want to head over.” Jazz frowned at the unmoving traffic blocking her route. “Was there a big wreck or something on Sixth Street? The traffic is completely stopped.”

“Let me check”

She nervously waited for an update, unable to see anything past the taillights in front of her. “Did you get any alerts? There’s a ton of smoke over here and it looks really thick.”

“Ummm, yeah. Just head to your place and I’ll meet you there, okay?”

Winter’s tone had changed, the anxious edge added to her words instantly raising alarm bells.

“Win?” Jazz cleared her throat, finding it tight to swallow around the ball of nerves sitting there. “What is it?”

“Just go to your place. I’m already in the car, so I’ll see you in five.”

Before she could argue, her best friend hung up.

The moment Jazz’s car was parked, she was racing up the stairs to her apartment. Out of breath and overwhelmed, she fumbled with her overfull key ring as she tried to find the right one.

She was making so much noise, she wasn’t surprised when her neighbor poked his head out to see what was going on.
