“Good enough?” she asked Sunshine.

He flashed a happy grin and played back what they’d just recorded with the full track.

Nikki bobbed her head to the beat, listening to all the layers involved. When her vocals were added, goose bumps skated across her arms.

“It’s perfect,” Sunshine declared. “Why don’t you do that more often? You’re really good.” He frowned at her.

Nikki rolled her eyes and then she noticed André in the doorway of the control room. He was leaning against the doorjamb, arms crossed, eyes on her in a way that felt oddly intimate.

She hadn’t seen him all day.

Part of her had wondered if their “airing of grievances” last night would alter their connection.

And it appeared it had.

It had deepened it.

He smiled and she had the strangest urge to grab him by his suspenders and kiss the heck out of him.

“My sister ruined a lot of stuff that used to be fun,” Asa said from the soundboard where he sat next to Johnny. “Like life.”

“Asa,” Nikki chastised with a frown. She shook her head.

Asa shrugged. Nikki took a breath and hoped no one asked follow-up questions.

She didn’t want to talk about Shelby. Or Winking Pete. Unless it was good memories, and then she’d be down. But the negative stuff? Nah. She’d pass.

Nikki’s phone beeped and she picked it up off the table, casually looking at the notification.

A text from Zara.

She headed for the door calling over her shoulder, “I have to get back to work now.”

André joined her in the hall and walked beside her all the way back to the lounge. He stopped in the doorway while she continued inside.

“Will this work for you?” he asked, meaning the lounge as her workspace.

She nodded and slid her phone into her pocket even though she wanted to see what it said. It would have to wait until she was alone.

She really needed to tell Johnny about Zara.

When her eyes met André’s, he had a sneaky smile on his face and his eyes crinkled at the corners.

“What?” she asked, feeling caught.

“What?” he mimicked followed by a chuckle. “You’re damn cute when you have a secret.”

“I don’t have a secret,” she denied even as heat spread over her cheeks.

“Of course not,” he pretended to agree with her.

And then he winked.

Just one, short, blink-and-you-miss-it wink.

But it was a spark that sent electricity down her spine.

“Shut up,” she said, looking away even as her pulse roared in her ears.
