He had the best stage name in the industry, truth be told. He was practically a walking billboard for happiness.

“I was wondering if you could do me a favor,” he said, leaning in the doorway. He drummed his tattooed fingers along the doorjamb and his dark blue eyes scanned the lounge.

“Whoa. Have I never seen this room before?” he asked, stepping inside.

“André just remodeled it.” She squinted at him. “It took him like two weeks. You seriously didn’t notice?”

Sunshine turned in a slow circle. “André did this? My brother-in-law, André?”

“That’s right,” Nikki said, tugging on her earlobe. “He’s your brother-in-law.”

How had she forgotten that very important detail?

“You said you needed a favor?” she asked Sunshine, wondering what it would be this time. His favors ranged from needing her to listen to something to verify what he already knew, to seeing if she had an air pump.

“Yes.” His eyebrows shot up and the new lounge was forgotten. “I heard a rumor that you used to play in a punk rock band.”

Asa.

Her lips twitched but otherwise she didn’t react. Sunshine studied her carefully.

“And that you do some light singing.”

She was already shaking her head.

“C’mon, Nikki,” Sunshine pleaded, taking a step her direction. “Just some background vocals. It’s a very sweet song and I need a light touch.”

She narrowed her eyes at him.

“I don’t sing. You need a fast guitar and some mediocre tambourine? I’m your girl.”

Sunshine’s grin was blinding. “One take. If you hate it, we’ll pull the plug.”

See? This was how he’d talked Sabine into marrying him after a month. He was adorable in his persistence.

Which was how she found herself in an iso booth with headphones on and a sheet of paper in front of her.

She’d listened to the track a few times and warmed up enough to satisfy her own inner critic. Sunshine was right, it needed light backing vocals. And the songwasvery sweet. He’d probably written it for his wife, the lovable jerk.

“We can get a professional in here. I can make a few calls, schedule some—”

“Nope.” Sunshine shook his head. “No schedules. This song’s soul is all about being in the moment.”

Nikki rolled her eyes and her shoulders back.

Fine. One take.

The track began and she did her best. She really did.

Backing vocals used to be something she enjoyed, so it wasn’t a surprise when it came back so naturally.

It finished and she twirled a finger in the air. “One more time. I can do better.”

No one argued and the track played again.

She did better that time, she could hear it.

When she left the iso booth, she was met by high fives.
