She sucked in a breath as it all came racing back to her. “Right! The install in Malibu this weekend!”

That was this weekend?

She nodded, her movements jerky. “Yes. I will be gone this weekend.”

Johnny narrowed his gaze but didn’t push. “Okay.” He slowly left the control room.

When she thought he had been gone a long enough time for it to be safe, she dropped her head back and slapped a palm to her forehead.

“Fuck,” she hissed.

“You forgot about Malibu?” Asa guessed.

She straightened in her chair and checked her phone for her flight information.

“It can’t possibly be tomorrow.” She clicked through her calendar. “It’s tomorrow. My flight is at eight in the morning. Ugh.” She dropped her phone in her lap and held her face with both hands. “How did this happen?”

She knew exactly how it had happened. She’d been so distracted by the hunky carpenter working down the hall that she’d lost track of things.

If Johnny hadn’t said anything, she’d have missed it.

And then where would she be?

Probably fired.

Okay, probably not. Johnny wouldn’t fire her for one mistake. But she’d disappoint him. And somehow, that was worse.

“I have to go home and pack. Like right now.”

“You don’t have to be in here with me. I think I can do this without supervision,” Asa said.

“I know.” She chewed on her bottom lip, thinking. It was a simple board install. She could do it drunk and with one hand tied behind her back—not that she would do that.

“It’s a three-day trip,” she said more to herself than to Asa. “I won’t be back until late Monday.”

“Do you need a ride?” Asa offered.

She glanced over at him. “Yeah.”

Why did her stomach feel like it was falling through space?

“Are you okay?” Asa asked, peering at her, concern lining his brow.

She nodded but knew her frown relayed something else.

“I just feel…” She shook her head because she didn’t know how she felt. Everything inside was a jumbled mess without clear definition.

“Did something happen last night? With André? Because when I picked you up, you seemed fine. Happy even.”

Did something happen?

That was the question on Nikki’s mind as well.

Because no, nothing hadhappened.

But everything felt very big.

And precarious.
