She could hear them talking and laughing from where she still sat at the table up the hill.

Nikki drained the last of her beer and tossed it in the recycle bin with a clatter.

“Here’s some extra towels.” Her mom, a veritable saint, set a stack of towels on the table in front of Nikki. “Neither one of you will want to sleep without cleaning up first.”

That was the other thing. It hadn’t been talked about, but it was assumed that André was staying the night.

With Nikki.

In the bunkhouse.

And as sexy as that sounded, Nikki had a feeling it was about to get veryunsexy in a minute.

André had chased her up there for a reason.

She was pretty sure she knew what it was and she wasn’t looking forward to the discussion he wanted to have.

Though it was probably going to be more like a lecture.

“I like him,” her mom said apropos of nothing.

Nikki huffed a small laugh. “I do too.”

When she saw his car come down the drive, she’d been so shocked she said more swears in front of her dad than she usually did.

But her insides had been melted into goo.

No one had ever come after her before.

Not that she’d made a habit of running away. But usually her people let her have her space.

Not André though.

It should have bothered her.

But it didn’t.

Because she could feel how much he cared by that one small action. The least she could do was listen to his lecture. He would never force her into something she was against.

And maybe, if she was very lucky, she’d get a repeat of that kiss from earlier.

Just the thought of it had her entire body blushing.

She gathered the towels in her arms and started down the path.

André and her dad met her halfway.

André eyed the towels in her arms with a quizzical look.

“Goodnight, kids. I’ll be down to call you for breakfast,” Dad said. He shook André’s hand, pressed a kiss to Nikki’s cheek, and headed on toward the house.

“C’mon, Professor,” Nikki said to André’s even more perplexed expression. “Do you have clothes to change into?” she asked, stopping at his car.

He retrieved a bag from the trunk.

They walked down the path side by side. The sounds of the night filling the space between them that seemed to crackle with electricity. They were alone again for the first time since their kiss that morning.

Suddenly it was all she could think about.
