He grinned and slid his hands into his pockets. “Do you like it?”

Did she like it?

It was everything.

She turned around and stared at him. His dark, tousled hair, his jeans and dirty white shirt that still had sawdust on the front, and his suspenders, and his hesitant smile, and his hazel eyes.

“Hey,” he said, stepping forward, his brows dipped. “What’s wrong? Is it the navy? Not the color you wanted? I can change it—oof!”

She threw her arms around his neck, he caught her, stepping back on one foot.

“It’s perfect,” she said into his neck. “Better than perfect.”

His arms tightened around her and she melted against his hard chest. He smelled like fresh-cut wood and paint and laundry detergent.

“She likes it,” he said, sounding pleased.

It was because she was so tired.

That was why she was so emotional.

At least that’s what she told herself as tears climbed up her throat.

She didn’t want to let go. In André’s arms she finally felt safe and warm andunderstood. Her friends, her boss, everyone was great. They were. They said and did wonderful things, but Andrégother in a way no one ever had.

Slowly, she let go and leaned back so she could see his face. She forced a watery smile. “Thank you. It’s incredible.”

His hand cupped her cheek, and he brushed a thumb through a tear that had spilled over. “Why the tears, love?”

She sucked in a breath, her hands flexed on his shoulders. “Sometimes you see me so clearly and it’s a bit overwhelming.”

He swallowed and his eyes drifted to her mouth and back to her eyes. “Most days you’re all I see.”

Her heart pounded and her skin zipped with electric currents as she zeroed in on his mouth. Her hands drifted down to where his suspender straps lay flat against his chest. She took hold of them, pulling him closer to her. Closer to everything she wanted.

Would he let her kiss him?

Would he push her away?

What if he kissed her back? Would it be as good as she remembered or would it be better?

She pressed her lips to the corner of his mouth, soft and unsure. His body tensed. She did it again, closer to the center of his mouth. Once more for good measure.

He didn’t move.

She dropped back, her heart thundering as she attempted to save face.

“I’m sorry, that was…” She loosened her grip on his suspenders and started to pull away. “That was out of line.”

She went to turn away from him, her face heated.

Oh God.

What had she done?

How was she going to go back to before? Friends didn’t kiss each other. She’d never had the inclination to kiss Asa or—

His hand closed around her arm and yanked her back toward him. His mouth met hers in a crushing kiss at the same moment their bodies collided.
