I can’t leave her here unsupervised, not after she drove my Corvette into a ditch and tried to run away from me for no apparent reason.

I can’t take her down to the station either. I’m dead if Thomas Warwick ever finds out I put my hands on his youngersister, but if I officially arrest her, he’d make the dying last forever.

Raleigh’s looking at me like I should’ve realized something by now. I raise my eyebrows at her. “You know I want Silver to eat shit as much as you do,” she begins.

I already don’t like this. “I’m starting to appreciate that, yes,” I say cautiously.

“And I imagine you don’t want to take your eyes off me anytime soon after last night,” she adds, batting her ridiculous eyelashes at me.

She’s making me seriously reconsider my stance on kissing. I glance down at her full mouth, then up at her mischievous eyes.

I can’t trust this woman, and I need to remember that. We might’ve found a moment of peace, or mutual understanding last night. But it’s gone now.

If I take her back into my bedroom, we’re getting nothing done today, and I’ll wake up tomorrow with my own roof missing from above my head.

“What do you want Raleigh?” I ask, crossing my arms to keep from wrapping them around her body.

“Take me investigating-”

“Absolutely not.”

Raleigh’s eyebrows rise. “Are you going to handcuff me to a drawer handle while you’re gone? Would you even do that to your dogs?”

I grit my teeth. Bringing the boys into this is a low blow, and I think she realizes that.

Speaking of Chance and Justice, though…

“All right then,” I say. “You can come with me once we get the address- on two conditions.”

Raleigh flashes her most brilliant smile at me, dimple and all. “What are those?”

Her smile is gone by the time she, Chance, Justice, and I all pile into my police cruiser. I’m wearing a fresh uniform, but Raleigh had to make do with a pair of my sweatpants, cinched as tight as they’ll go, and a black long sleeve shirt that is too big in every direction. It’s not the most professional outfit by any means, but at least it’s clean.

It’s also doing something strange to me to see her wearing my clothes.

Chance and Justice are more than happy about the impromptu car day. They pile into the back seat, and I make sure to slide open the plastic partition so they don’t feel too isolated. I have cold water bottles ready for them when we stop to take breaks and treats to eat throughout the day. Arguably, out of the four of us, they’re traveling in the most luxury.

Raleigh narrows her eyes at me as I start the cruiser up. I’m sure she’s wondering if I’m sticking her with the dogs as some twisted form of punishment.

But I would never do that.

I flash Raleigh my own dimpled smile. “Ready?”

CHAPTER 18

Raleigh

If I’d been toldthat I’d spend the day riding around in a police cruiser with two huge dogs and the county sheriff of my own volition… I’d laugh whoever said something so absurd out of the room.

And yet here I am, Derrick’s passenger princess.

I’m even wearing his clothes, for fuck’s sake. They smell like fresh air and lavender andhim, and it’s way more difficult than it should be not to bury my face in the long sleeves and inhale. My white wedge boots don’t exactly match, but whatever- I’ll survive.

The reason I’m wearing them? Mine had puke on them. I’ve been feeling nauseous a lot lately- figured it was just my bad food choices or the stress of trying to catch Silver. But the moment I threw up, something clicked. When was my last period? It’s been over three months.

Three months… is three periods I should’ve had that I’ve missed, and worse, didn’t noticethat I’ve missed.

My periods have always been a little unreliable- it’s not unusual for me to go a month without a period, and then have two in rapid succession- but neverthisunreliable. I can’t have missed three menstrual cycles without noticing.
