His eyes went wide, as if I’d just said something that was so ridiculous, he thought for sure I was kidding.

“I hope that’s not true, Miss Connie. You were all he talked about in those last few weeks. I hadn’t seen him that happy ever since he first got sick. Plus, a lot of this equipment was bought especially for you, for your voice, and your band. Still, you must do what you think is right. Before you make up your mind, I’d like to show you the rest of the ranch, if you have time. Plus, maybe you’d like to meet the rest of the folks who work this place. We’re a mixed bag, that’s for sure, but we’re all good at what we do.”

How could I possibly say no to any of that?

I couldn’t.

“Just breathe and say yes,” Luke whispered, as he plopped down next to me, and rubbed my back.

“Can we have a moment?” I told Bobby.

“Sure, take all the time you need. I’ll be in the kitchen with Mrs. Nash. She runs the house and does most of the cooking. I’m sure she’d love it if you and your friends here would stay for dinner.”

For some reason, dinner sounded good to me. Even though the guys ate until they could burst, I’d only had one little pocket at the beginning of my shift. Besides, by the time we saw the rest of this ranch, even they might be ready for dinner.

“Sounds perfect,” I told him. “We have plenty of time.”

“Great! I’ll let her know. I’ll be in the kitchen. When you’re ready for the tour, you can find me there.”

And with that, he left, closing the door behind him, giving us some privacy.

Not a moment later, Rascal picked up a guitar, slung the strap over his shoulder, plugged it in, and proceeded to check if it was tuned… which it was.

“This is a classic Martin D-28 Deluxe. Hank Williams’ favorite guitar. Wow! I can’t believe it. I could never find one of these that I could afford, and here it is,” Rascal said, while his fingers plucked out a tune.

Josh picked up the fiddle, and within the next few moments, Luke started on the drums, and before I knew what was happening, they were singing, Zac Brown’sA Different Kind of Fine, and they were singing it right to me.

“This isn’t fair!” I yelled, as I stood.

They were laughing and smiling now, totally in their element.

“You can’t sound this good!” I yelled as their voices filled the soundproof room, surrounding me with a silky warmth that charmed my soul. I didn’t bother to overthink this moment or think about how much I enjoyed hearing their voices again. I just went with it, went with the emotion that bubbled up inside me.

And before I knew what was happening, I’d removed my shoes and socks and joined in on the chorus, dancing and hip bumping with both Rascal and Josh.

I couldn’t be myself if I wasn’t barefooted, and right now, I wanted to simply enjoy this moment.

I didn’t think about what this all meant, or what my next step might be, I only thought about how amazing it felt to sing with my band again: Hot Sugar.

Damn, but it felt good!

I couldn’t believe this was happening. Couldn’t believe we were playing together again. It felt surreal watching Connie dancing, singing, and kidding around with us like she used to.

She’d even taken off her shoes like she had when we were kids, so I knew this was some serious fun for her.

Was I dreaming?

I didn’t know anymore, nor did I care.

All I knew was that we were playing music with some of the best equipment I’d ever had the privilege to hold in my hands, and we were having fun doing it.

What the hell was that all about? And to think only a few hours ago, we thought for sure she’d give us the finger and tell us to get lost.

I didn’t know what would happen next, nor did I want to think about it. I only wanted to concentrate on this moment… this time in space when we were all together again with the one woman none of us ever could get over.

I wasn’t one-hundred percent sure of how Rascal and Luke felt about Connie. I knew they cared about her, but I didn’t know what was in their hearts. At least not like my own feelings about her. I’d been crushing on Connie ever since we’d first met all those years ago. Nothing had changed since then, nothing except maybe my dirty fantasies about her. Those had ripened over the years and now that we were hip bumping, and singing together, I wanted those fantasies to become my reality.
