Internally, Maxbristled.Externally, hegaveSama smug smile. “You’vealways beenjealousofme.” He wasonlyjoking,butthewaySam’smouth thinned for thatsplitsecond,hethoughthe’d touchedon asorespot.

“Well,you did getthe girl,didn’t you?”

Atthementionof Chelsea,his moodsouredoncemore. “Yeah,”heagreed. Hewas glad whenthe waitress returned withhisdrinks. Sheslid a cocktail napkin to himwith awinkthen walked away.

“You luckyfucking bastard,”Sammuttered. Withoutlooking, Maxshoved thenapkin in Sam’s direction.

“Takeit.There’s nofuckingwayI’m getting involvedwithanother woman rightnow. Getting screwed overoncewas enough.”

Samwassilentfor a second,giving Maxtimeto drinkhis vodka in peace.“Doyou thinkshe’s coming back?”

Maxscrubbed a handoverhis faceand groaned. He didn’tneed thisquestion asked of him, becauseheknewtheanswer. Saying itoutloudwouldonlymakeitmorereal. “No.”

“Not even for Erin?”

Maxlooked hisfriend in theeye.“Not even for her.Shelefther. Whatkindof woman would leavetheirown child?”

Bringing thebeer glass to hislips, Max drankuntil hecouldseethebottomofthething. Itwould takea lotmorealcohol thanthattomakehimgonumb,butitwasa damn good start.

“Whatareyou going todo now?”

“Theonlything I can,”Maxreplied. “I’m going togeton withmy life. I’mgoing tolookafter Erin likeChelsea neverdid and forgetaboutthebitch.”
