I helped her in the back seat and closed the door quickly. "Move."

Vander punched it and we drove off.

As soon as we were clear of the drive, Vander said, "No tail?"

I looked back at the mansion. "I don't see one." It appeared no one noticed us, and Tommy didn't call out an alert.

"What happened?" I asked Wren.

"Tommy came into the bathroom through a hidden door. He pulled me out and dragged me upstairs. He started asking me why I hadn't paid my dues. I accused him of killing my parents." She was talking fast but didn't seem panicked, which was good.

"Holy shit."

"He denied it! He lied. I can't believe he's such a liar. He said he'd never met my parents."

"How did you get out?"

"I poked him in the balls with my hair stick." She grinned and held up one of the pins she'd been wearing in her hair.

"You did what?"

"I poked him in the general groin area. Not sure if I hit actual ballsack." She made a jabbing motion with her impromptu weapon.

"What the hell?"

"I don't know, but it hurt him, and he went down. That's all that matters." She let out a subdued snort and started to laugh.

Vander stared at her in the rearview. "Nice job, Wren." He nodded appreciatively.

That sent her into full-blown chortling laughter. She was covering her mouth with her hand and rocking back and forth.

Vander chuckled. Then I kissed her because she was fucking beautiful like that, and I wanted some of it to touch me.

Chapter 24 Survival and Evasion

Wren

The kiss in the car with Magnum blew my everloving mind. I knew Vander was watching and didn't care. Connecting his lips with mine after all the excitement left me feeling invincible. Was this why Magnum did his commando things? Was he addicted to this rush?

Finally, he pulled away, and I held my hand to my chest over my frantic heartbeat. "I can't believe I did that."

"You are a fucking rock star." He slung an arm around my shoulders and tugged me against his side. I didn't feel like a rock star. I felt like a hot mess, but if that was what he thought, I'd take it.

"Heard the view was nice up there. Great for stargazing." Vander smirked as he glanced at us in the rearview mirror.

Oh no. The whole team probably heard what we'd done.

"Don't even go there," Mag warned as he pulled out his phone and tapped quickly. "We got a new problem. Sent a visual."

Vander nodded. "Let's rendezvous with the team for your SITREP."

Their words flew past me in a blur. Everything had happened so fast. Did Magnum really do what he just did in the library of Kenny's mansion? I could not believe I'd poked Tommy in the balls and ran from him at gunpoint. Oh my God. That was terrifying.

His eyes studied me like he was reading my thoughts. We pulled into the garage of the safe house and the doorclosed behind us. "We're gonna be late to the after-action. I got plans to take my wife somewhere right now."

Vander looked back over his shoulder and squinted at Mag. "The fuck?"

"She needs to decompress." Mag reached in his jacket and removed the listening device he had in there. He handed it to Vander who took it without a word, but his jaw was tight. "It's Valentine's Day, Viper. You take a moment with Celeste too, and we'll meet up at zero hundred hours."
