I placed my hand on her shoulder. “I’ve been suspended without pay for three months.”

“What!” Her hands flew over her mouth.

“Ethan, I’m so sorry.” She fell into my arms.

I pressed my lips against the top of her coily black hair.

“It’s ok.”

Her teary eyes stared back into my blue ones. “I can get a third job and help pay the bills while I’m living at your place.”

The blood boiled in my veins. I gripped the sides of her head. “Absolutely not! I will continue to provide for us. I have enough money in savings to last two years. Most of the savings was set aside for my practice. If you decide you want your own place, I will pay your rent. Even if matters took a turn for the worse, we’d live in my parents’ pool house. There is no way I will let you get another job. As a matter of fact, you are going to quit your jobs and start your own online marketing business. Your father’s company will be your first client.” I pulled Malaysia into my arms.

I glanced into her parents’ faces. “Mr. and Mrs. Newton, I don’t want you to worry about Malaysia’s well-being. I plan to be the only man she will ever need. No offense, Mr. Newton.”

His dark eyes brightened. “None taken. You are a selfless man, Dr. Daniels.”

Malaysia smiled. “He sure is.”

I made eye contact with her father. “Please, call me Ethan, sir.”

“Well, Ethan, looks like we will see you from time to time at Sunday dinner. I bet I know now why Malaysia hasn’t been to dinner on Sunday at all for the past month.” Boisterous laughter released from deep within.

My face burned.

“Ouch.” I glanced back at Jordan.

“He’s waking up!” I stated.

I placed my hands on his chest. “Jordan, I’m Dr. Daniels. I need you to breathe slowly.” I quickly ran my hand under the sanitizer dispenser. I rubbed my hands together.

Mrs. Newton stepped closer. “Baby, I’m here!”

“Mom.”

I pressed the stethoscope against his chest listening to his lungs and heart. “Jordan, I was your surgeon. I removed the bullet from your brain. Follow my finger.” I flashed the small wand light in each eye. “You will make a full recovery.”

“Wait, you’re the guy from the corner.”

Malaysia stepped closer. “I think you should rest, Jordan.”

“Your sister is right.”

His father stood at the other side of the bed, clenching Jordan’s hand. “We love you, son.” A single tear slid down his dark-brown cheek.

“Jordan, Dr. Kruger will be in soon. He will handle your care going forward.”

Jordan kept his eyes on me. He knew I was the person who’d saved him. He and I would talk later. Malaysia leaned over, whispering in his ear.

“Ok,” he stated.

He stretched his hand out toward me. “Thank you…for…saving…my life.”

“You’re welcome.” I gripped his hand firmly.

Tears slid down his face. His father cleaned his wet face.

“I’ll be back.” I walked out of the room over to the nurses’ station. Malaysia followed.
