My eyebrows rose. “Ok?”

He stepped closer. “You aren’t getting off that easy. If you want to remain a doctor at this hospital, you will be suspended for three months without pay. If you’d like to try your chances at finding another position at another hospital, go for it.” He smirked.

He knew he had me by the balls. This was the hospital I’d dreamed of working in after college. I couldn’t go into private practice for myself right now. Not without a loan. In six months’, time I wouldn’t need a loan. This was also the hospital I wanted to send my patients to when it was time to perform surgery. I loosened my tie, locking eyes with the chief.

“Suspension it is, sir.”

He retrieved a manila folder from his desk. “Very well, you’ll need to sign some papers.”

“Chief, my brain stimulator project is almost complete. Am I allowed to complete the project on the premises?”

He exhaled. “You’re pushing it, Ethan. You are lucky your father and are I are good friends. The answer is yes, but try not to frequent the halls.”

I smiled. “Of course not, Chief.” I signed the stack of papers.

“Jordan Newton’s case will be handled by Dr. Kruger.”

I nodded, standing to my feet. “I’ll check Jordan Newton’s vitals for the last time and I won’t interfere with Dr. Kruger’s care over the patient.”

“Good.”

I shook the chief’s hand. “My parents and I look forward to seeing you at your New Year’s Eve party?”

“See you then, Ethan. Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas.”

I peeked through the window at Malaysia and her family talking to one another. The door creaked as I stepped inside. “Good morning.”

Malaysia smiled brightly. “Good morning.”

“Dr. Daniels, how are you doing this morning?” Mrs. Newton grinned.

“I’m fine. Thank you.” I walked over to Mr. Newton, stretching my hand out toward him.

“I hope the bigger room provided some level of comfort, sir?”

He shook my hand. “It did. Are you trying to get on my good side?”

My lips curled upward. “Yes, sir. I hope it’s working.”

He smiled.

I slipped the duffel bag from my shoulder as I approached Malaysia sitting on the couch.

She removed the duffel from my hand. “Thank you, Ethan. I’ll be back shortly.”

She walked into the bathroom, then I stepped to the foot of the bed, retrieving Jordan’s chart. I took my time reading through every report from the doctors and nurses who’d cared for Jordan on the night shift.

“Is everything ok?” Mrs. Newton asked. Her dark eyes were welcoming. She had a gentle spirit.

I stepped closer to Jordan, checking his vitals and his medication levels. “Mrs. Newton, Jordan should wake up today. He’ll be groggy and in an understandable amount of pain as a result of the surgery.” I glanced at Mr. Newton then back at his wife.

“I am no longer Jordan’s doctor. Dr. Kruger is an excellent doctor. He’ll take over in my absence.”

Mr. Newton sat up straight. Malaysia ran out of the bathroom, slipping a purple T-shirt over her head.

“Ethan, what is going on?”
