Ethan

First thing Monday morning, I received a phone call from Chief Asher’s secretary. I was told to meet him in his office at ten a.m. I knew he was going to ream me out for my actions yesterday. I sat on the edge of the bed running my fingers through my hair. I tried wrapping my mind around my fate.∞

My leg shook nonstop while I waited to be seen by the chief.

“Dr. Daniels, the chief will see you now.”

“Thank you.” I walked toward his office door.

The door flew open before I had the chance to knock.

“Ethan.”

My eyes widened. “Brandon, do you know what is going on?”

He glanced around the medium-sized waiting area.

“Yes. Listen, take the punishment my father is handing down to you. I informed him his top brain surgeon was thinking about private practice.” He winked.

“Brandon! Why did you tell your father about the practice?” I whispered.

Brandon’s heavy hand landed on my shoulder. “Calm down. I told my dad I was considering going into private practice with you. Like I said just take the punishment if you want to continue working at Mass General. I have to get going. Rounds are calling my name. Oh, and one more thing. Be sure to bring Malaysia over for dinner next Friday.”

His brown eyebrows rose. “You know, the woman Dr. Stephens charged into my father’s office losing his shit over. You must have really stuck it to him.” He chuckled.

“The four of us having dinner together will make my wife happy. See you later, Dr. Daniels.”

All I could do was scratch my brow and shake my head as Brandon disappeared out of the office waiting area.

I took a deep breath before entering the chief’s office.

“Good morning, Chief Asher.” I smiled.

He stood. “Dr. Daniels, have a seat.”

I unbuttoned my navy suit jacket, pressing my red tie against my crisp white shirt as I sat in the leather chair across from the chief.

Dr. Asher sat in silence and, removed his glasses. He stared momentarily. “What the hell were you thinking yesterday? Performing surgery on your female friend’s brother. Ethan, you know that is against the rules!” he huffed.

“Sir, I was the only brain surgeon who was available at the time. Dr. Crocker was in surgery, and Dr. Kruger was on call…” I leaned forward.

“There was no time to wait. I had to try to save his life, sir.”

Hopping out of his tall black leather chair, he paced in front of the large window overlooking the city of Boston.

He turned, glaring at me. “Dr. Daniel’s, you are aware if Dr. Stephens hadn’t enlightened me of the situation, I would have found out one way or another?”

“Yes, Chief.” I slid my sweaty palms up and down my navy slacks.

He turned his attention to the city, hands clasped behind his back. “Dr. Asher mentioned you are considering private practice. Is that true?”

I cleared my throat. “Yes, sir.”

“My son made it a point to inform me he was considering going into private practice with you. I can’t blame you. Private practice allows you more time to golf.” He turned his attention to me.

“Brandon Asher is my number one trauma surgeon. And you are my top brain surgeon. If you two want to leave, you’ll need to find top surgeons to replace you.”
