“Yes, Mom?”

“Where is Dr. Daniels?” She approached running her fingers over my long coils.

“He went home. He’ll return tomorrow.”

My mother leaned forward, caressing Jordan’s face.

“You are going to be all right, Jordan.”

My dad reached for my mother’s free hand from the other side of the bed. “He is going to be just fine, baby.”

I smiled. My father loved my mother so much. It was sweet seeing the love in his eyes for her.

“Malaysia, are you living with the doctor?”

I tried to swallow past the lump in my throat but couldn’t.

“Yes, for now, Daddy. I didn’t have heat or water at my apartment.”

“We told you several times to stay with us.”

“I know…”

“Oh, Glenn, can’t you see she has feelings for the man? She doesn’t want to live with us. She wants to live with him.”

My mother cut her eyes at me. “But, Malaysia, how do you expect him to make an honest woman out of you? You know the saying…”

“Yes, Mom, why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?” I sighed.

“Ethan has offered to pay my rent at a new apartment downtown. I’m not sure that will happen now. Ethan wasn’t supposed to operate on Jordan because we’re dating. He is too close to the situation. He may get suspended or lose his job.” I glanced at my dad then my mom.

My father’s mouth dropped open.

“I hate he could lose his job because of me. But he is the top brain surgeon in Boston.” My sad gaze fell over my brother.

“I’m grateful. I didn’t return home to fall in love. I came home to help get our family business in order, then move back to California. Ethan’s father is a world-renowned scientist. Maybe once Jordan is better, he can meet Dr. Daniels and possibly get an internship with him in the future since Jordan loves science too.”

I smiled at Jordan. “Ethan’s father is nice. You’d like him, Jordan.”

My mother gasped. I glanced at her.

“You met his father? This sounds serious.”

I chuckled. “Mom, I actually met his family, but it’s no big deal.”

Later that night, the nurses moved Jordan to a larger ICU room. They said Dr. Daniels authorized the move. Two green couches were in a L-shape in the corner of the room. My father took residence on the couch under the window, and I set up on the couch along the wall across from Jordan’s bed. My mother sat in the reclining chair at my brother’s side closest to my dad. I laid on the couch watching my mother and father love on my brother. A smile took my lips. Ethan was so thoughtful, even in his absence. He’d done everything for me. Threatened to kill my super, murdered for me and my family, and sacrificed his career. Yeah, I’d say he was in love with me. The corner of my lips curled upward. And I am in love with him.
