Malaysia

Standing in the middle of Ethan’s living room the seamstress tightened a few stitches along my waistline. I peered into the mirror next to the front door. Good thing I took off work today. To ease my mind, he gave me another thousand dollars.

Early this morning, Ethan had the tallest tree delivered to his condo. My morning was spent decorating the lush tree.

“Wow!” Ethan smiled, walking into the house.

His presence brought me back from my thoughts.

“Red looks amazing on that heart-stopping frame of yours.” He couldn’t stop staring.

“Thank you, Ethan.”

The seamstress fanned out the light-weight, flowy red gown below my waist.

Her brown cheeks lit up. “You are going to turn a lot of heads tonight at the Christmas party.”

“I am, aren’t I?”

We snickered.

He grinned. “Mrs. Haskins, thank you for working your magic.”

She stood back, admiring her work. “I love working with beautiful women like Malaysia. She is a sweetheart.”

I walked over, embracing her. “Thanks again. I hope you enjoy the gift from Ethan and I.” I stepped back, running my hands down my legs.

He helped her slip into her coat. She retrieved her belongings from the sofa. “I know I will. Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas,” Ethan and I stated.

Mrs. Haskins disappeared out the door.

Ethan stood marveling at the huge tree displayed before the floor-to-ceiling living room window. “The tree looks amazing.” He smoothed his hand over his navy tie.

Falling in line next to him, I took in the beautiful tree. “It does look good. Usually I help my family decorate a six-foot tree, not one nearly twice the height.”

He chuckled.

I strolled into the bathroom to apply my make-up and style my hair. I pulled my hair up, twirling my long tresses into a ball. He stepped behind me, pressing his lips into the crease of my neck, circling his hands around my waist.

“Are you still refusing to take the pill?”

I tried focusing on the task at hand. “Yes, Ethan, taking the birth control pills and having unprotected sex makes things personal. We aren’t a couple.”

“Do you want to be?”

“No.”

He threw his hands in the air. “Fine, keep lying to yourself. I want you to be all mine.”

“Ethan, you need a woman with a strong financial portfolio. You know, I don’t have anything to bring to the table.”

He stepped back, glaring through the mirror at me.

“Don’t tell me what I need, Malaysia!”
