“We’ll be right behind you, I just have to talk to Kelly about something really quick.”

Paloma gave us her customary doe-eyed look, then winked and walked off.

Kelly turned her black eyes on me, curiosity glimmering in them.

“What’s up?” she asked.

We were still standing closer than close, and I worried that she could hear my heart thumping away inside my chest.

Stay cool, man, stay cool.

“Last night was indeed amazing,” I began, “but it made me realize something.”

Her arched brows drew together as she frowned.

“And what was that?”

“That I’m not just into you because of the way you look. I’m into you because, well, I’m into you.” I sighed in frustration. My words weren’t coming out right but I hoped she got what I was trying to say.

She chuckled. “Is…is that your way of saying—”

“Will you go on a date with me?”

For a second, she looked genuinely taken aback, but then she was shaking her head and my heartbeat accelerated even more.

“Jase…I don’t know.”

“Why not? We’ve spent almost every day of the last few weeks together and most of that time was spent in close physical proximity. And after all that, we managed to not kill each other.” She parted her lips to say something, but I kept going. I was on a roll now. “We got the physical part out of the way, so now we can go into this with clear minds. You won’t have to wonder if I’m just wining and dining you to get you into bed. You’ll know that I’m doing all of that because I genuinely enjoy being in your company. I like hanging out with you, Kelly. I like hearing your high-pitched laugh when I say something funny.”

She pursed her lips, fighting back a smile.

“I know you were worried about crossing the line at work, but the catalogue is done now. We don’t have to—”

Without warning, she leaned in and pressed her lips against mine, effectively silencing me. She kept the kiss short, but it still affected me, nonetheless. When she started to pull away, I caught the side of her face, keeping it close to mine.

“Is that a yes? Will you, Kelendria Towers, date me?”

She rolled her eyes. “Really? You had to say my whole name?”

“I didn’t say your middle name,” I pointed out.

“You don’t know my middle name.”

I laughed. “Good point. What is it?”

“Marie. Yours?”

“Robert.”

She laughed, pulling away and smoothing her hair down. If she cared that everyone in this room had probably just seen us kiss, she didn’t show it.

We were still standing at the food table, so I handed her a plate and grabbed one for myself.

“Hey, something funny just occurred to me,” Kelly said, loading up her plate with fruit.

I gave her a questioning look.

“We’re like a BWWM couple now.” She laughed at the blank expression on my face. “You know, the ‘black woman white man genre’ that the authors of the boxed set write in.”
