“I didn’t love you on our first honeymoon.”

“Did you even like me?”

“Of course. I was intrigued by you.”

“How many women did you consider marrying before me?”

“A few.”

“Tell me how many.”

Foster lets my hand go and sighs. “Does it matter?”

“I want to know. Is that too much to ask?”

“Frankly, it was always you. I went back and forth about whether I should even ask you. You seemed meek and quiet.”

“And now you know different.”

“I do. You’re the life of the party.”

“I told you I was frightened of you,” I reiterate. “The day you asked me those horrible questions, I heard you banging the conference table in a meeting beforehand when I was in the copy room next door.”

“I was angry,” he asserts. “The board wanted to make a decision of which I did not agree with.”

I smirk. “Did they see it your way?”

“Yes. It’s my company.”

“Then why have a board at all?”

“To keep me in check. My father insisted since he lent me money.”

“Does that mean you’ll be letting the board go in a few months?”

“I haven’t decided. My father doesn’t have a chance now that we’re in love.”

“If you don’t stop talking and let me sleep, I’m going to divorce you.”

Foster kisses my cheek as I close my eyes. “Sleep, my love.”

I sleep for most of the flight, having pleasant dreams about the sun and beach. At some point, I’m awakened by Foster having a heated discussion on the phone. He hangs up as the captain’s baritone voice comes over the loudspeaker to tell us we will soon be landing at Providenciales International Airport. He also gives the weather report: sunny and eighty-eight degrees with a slight chance of rain later in the day.

“Foster, we’re going to Turks and Caicos?”

He grins. “We are,” he affirms as he re-takes his seat next to me. “Did you have a nice nap?”

I yawn. “I feel better, not as tired. Who were you talking to?”

He knits his brows, answering, “My father.”

“Isn’t there some way you can come to terms with him? Your relationship seems so… adversarial.”

“That’s the way he wants it. Sometimes I feel he competes with me. My father is not happy I won’t be paying back the loan. He thought I would fail for sure. This is why we have to be very careful.”

“Careful, how?”

“We can’t mention how we came to be.”
