“Why would it matter? We’re together for real now.”

“Mason Black doesn’t like to be made a fool of, ” he says sarcastically.

“Couldn’t your mother help in that respect?”

“She doesn’t get involved in my father’s business.”

I frown, pressing, “Even where her son is concerned?”

“Even me. Maybe you can convince her. She loves you.”

I caress the back of his head, playing with the tiny curls at the nape of his neck. “Foster, she loves you.”

“I know she does, but you have a better relationship with her.”

“You could try not to call her mother all the time. Call her mom.”

“It wouldn’t be proper. You didn’t grow up in an upper-class home. Everything is manners, respect, and business.”

“Is this what I can expect for our children?”

Foster’s expression tightens. “Absolutely not. I refuse to bring our children up in high society. I’d rather move to a small town and forget we have money if that’s the case.”

“Somehow, I doubt that. You would miss having all money can offer.”

“Do you miss it?”

“Miss what?”

“The simple life.”

I raise my voice when I ask, “Are you calling my upbringing simple?”

“I’m not saying that. I meant without all the headaches of being rich. People watch us and aspire to be us.”

“I didn’t. I just wanted to be debt-free.”

“Is that why you agreed to marry me?”

“It was. I was drowning in debt. You know this.”

“I wish our union started differently. You deserve better.”

“The point of our honeymoon is to accept the past and move on to our future. Where are we staying?”

“A private villa with its own pool and beach.”

“You offer me that and expect me to live a simple life again?” I joke with a chuckle.

“Spoiled already.”

“Not spoiled, just happy.”

The plane starts its descent, and the seat belt light comes on. Foster buckles his, and twenty minutes later, we are on the ground. Our bags are loaded into a waiting white SUV with a driver wearing a white uniform and black-billed hat, which he tips when he makes eye contact. I nod in return.

The sky is almost cloudless, and from the highway, I can see the turquoise water. My heart flutters as I think about the time I will be spending with Foster over the next week. He catches my attention by brushing my arm with his fingers, sending shivers down my spine.

“Wait until you see the villa.”
