“Wow, that’s some dress.”

I twirl for him, “Do you like it? I was worried it would be too risqué.”

“It’s perfect. You have nice legs.”

“Thank you.” I pat my hair, which I have pinned up, making sure it is still in place.

“Ready to go?” Foster asks.

“As ready as I’ll ever be.”

“You’ll do fine. Just relax and let me take the lead. My mother is very anxious to meet you.”

“My family should be at your parent’s place by one. I’d like to be there before they arrive.”

“I’m sorry you couldn’t invite everyone, but my parents wanted it small. Just family and close friends.”

“It’s fine,” I assure. “I don’t think Zane and Lana will stay long. She’s very uncomfortable with her pregnancy. You’ll also meet Jordan, Emma, Rory, and Hunter—they’re my closest friends.”

“I know Jordan Grayson. We’ve done some business together, and Hunter Lawson has bid against me for real estate.”

I bite my lip. “I hope that doesn’t mean their presence will be a problem.”

“No, it won’t be a problem.” Foster stands and straightens his jacket, buttoning it before he pulls at the knot in his tie. “Peters is downstairs.”

I check my hair in the mirror once more, curling the tendrils at the side of my face around my fingers. I’m wearing a pair of teardrop-shaped sapphire earrings, which Foster touches as he comes up behind me.

“I like these. You have delicate ears. I think my parents will find you perfect for me.”

“I hope so.”

Foster places his hand on my bare back and leads me out to the hall. He drops it when we got into the elevator, and I am suddenly cold under the air conditioning, shivering.

“Are you okay?” he asks.

“Just a bit nervous.”

“You’ll do great.”

I marvel at the lobby of the Black building. It was a work of art with its beautiful cathedral ceilings, gold accents, light marble floors, and lacquered wood walls. A large bouquet of white lilies sits in a crystal vase on a lacquered table that matched the walls. Their fragrance fills the space and my nose as Foster presses the elevator button. As the car ascends to the penthouse on the thirty-fifth floor, he grasps my hand.

He softly kisses my cheek as we step out. My stomach is a mass of butterflies. Foster must have known because he gives my hand a gentle squeeze. The door to the penthouse flies open as if the Blacks could sense our presence.

“There’re cameras in the hall,” Foster whispers.

A petite woman wearing a long elegant white dress and matching sandals smiles widely at us. As I get closer, I can see how similar her eyes are to Foster’s, except hers are a darker shade of green. Her short blonde hair is cut into a cute bob. I have a feeling I am going to like this woman.

“Laura Black,” Foster announces, “may I present my fiancée, Paige Butler.”

Laura holds out her hand, and when I take it, she pulls me against her for a hug, holding me tightly against her body.

“I thought he would never marry,” she says sweetly. “I’m so glad to invite you into our family. Welcome.”

“Tha–thank you.”

“Don’t be nervous. We’re all friends here.”

Laura lets me go and gives Foster a quick hug and peck on the cheek before she grasps my hand again and leads me into her home. The foyer opens into a massive room, which consists of a combination kitchen, sitting, and dining areas. Thick matching wool carpets of cream, steel blue, and mustard yellow splay out under the dining table as well as the living room area. The dining room table was teak and was surrounded by fourteen cream upholstered chairs.
