He glances at the gold Rolex on his wrist. “I thought I should be for your first night here.”
“I’m just putting away my clothes.”
“Did you find a dress for tomorrow?”
“I did. I think you’ll like it.”
“Can I see?”
“Tomorrow.”
I take out several sets of lingerie and place them on the dark granite counter so I could fold each pair before putting them into the drawers. Glancing at Foster, I notice him was watching me intently.
“Those are pretty,” he comments.
“I have no idea why I have them. I rarely wear lingerie.”
“Your boyfriends didn’t ask you to wear it?”
“Not much. My dating life was a bit chaotic.”
“Well, our marriage will give you a break. Do you want to order a pizza?”
I raise my eyebrows. “You surprise me every day.”
“If you would prefer something else, let me know. Peters can pick up dinner from anywhere in the city.”
“I’m not very hungry. I have anxiety about tomorrow.”
“We’ll go over a few things tonight. Don’t be afraid.”
Distracted, I drop the black baby doll I was holding into the drawer. “Suppose I screw up?”
“You won’t. I’ll be with you the entire time.”
I sigh. “I feel shitty lying to my family and friends.”
“Keep in mind what you’ll come out of this with.”
“Money isn’t everything,” I say pointedly. “Don’t you want love?”
“I once did, but now I’m concentrating on business. Love gets you in trouble.”
“Unfortunately, I have to agree, but I still want it.”
“You’ll have plenty of time for love after we divorce.”
I pick up the baby doll and neatly fold it. “I guess.”
“Pizza?”
“Yes, but I might not eat much.”
“Just relax.”
Foster turns on his heel, and once I hear his footfalls on the hardwood in the hallway, I sag against the island, wondering if I can pull this off for the next eighteen months.
The next day, Foster is lounging on the couch in the living room when I come out of my bedroom. He looks handsome in a tan suit, blue shirt, and dark blue tie. It’s the most casually dressed I’ve seen him since I started working for him. He looks up when he hears me approach.
