Chapter 3

After another sleepless night, I rise early and get ready for work. Lana and Zane aren’t in the kitchen as usual, but I heard laughter coming from their bedroom. It hits me that soon I won’t be living here after my engagement to Foster is announced. It would be better for me since I didn’t relish the idea of sleeping on the couch in Zane’s office once my nephews were born.

When I arrive at work, Mark isn’t at his desk, and the door to Foster’s office is ajar. Peering inside, I find Foster. I knock and push the door open before Foster can answer. He looks more casually dressed than I’d seen since I started working here. His black suit jacket is hanging over the back of his chair, and the sleeves of his white shirt are rolled up, showing off his muscular forearms. He looks up at me as I enter.

“You look tired,” he says.

“Several sleepless nights will do that to you.”

Foster put the folder he has in his hand down. “You’re making this more complicated than it has to be.”

I sit on the leather chair in front of his desk. “Why me?”

“You’re convenient.”

I scowl. “That makes me sound cheap.”

“I didn’t mean it to. You’re not the only one I looked at. I had several girlfriends I considered.”

“They didn’t fit?”

“Not if I want to save myself the aggravation.”

“Aggravation?”

“It’s not important. I’m just glad you decided.”

I smirk. “Who said I did? Maybe I’m here to tell you no.”

Foster raises his eyebrows. “Are you?”

“I’m willing to be Mrs. Paige Black if you agree to what we talked about yesterday.”

He sighs. “The holidays?”

“Yes. It would seem odd if my husband didn’t attend.”

“You could say I was busy.”

“Every holiday?”

He strokes his chin. “I see your point. I’ll try to make myself available for at least a holiday or two.”

“Good. Then we have a deal.”

“Close the door.”

I got up to secure the door. Mark was just settling in at his desk, and he wasn’t paying attention. When I turn back, Foster is holding up the contract.

“I won’t sign it unless you added the holidays.”

“I already did. I had a feeling you wouldn’t compromise.”

“You’re already acting like a husband.”

“Just keep in mind, this is still a business transaction. The funds we discussed will be transferred to your account by tomorrow.”

I move around his desk and place my signature where indicated. Foster’s cologne makes my head swim as I finish signing. He smells good, and I wonder why I never noticed before Foster brought up the proposition. Maybe it was because I used to dislike the man. In the last forty-eight hours, I’d come to realize he wasn’t as bad as he seemed. He is as human as the rest of us.
