Foster presents me with a four-carat emerald cut diamond before I leave his office. His intuitive nature made him sure I would say yes, and he had it all planned before I signed the contract. My first order of business was to speak to Zane, Lana, and my parents. Foster was having the PR department prepare a statement for the news outlets. I wanted to tell my family before it got out that we were engaged. I left work early and stopped at home where Zane was working for the day.

I find my brother in his office with Lana relaxing on his brown leather couch. They are both surprised to see me.

“Paige, are you sick?” Lana asks.

“I have something to tell you.”

Zane closed his laptop and gave me his full attention while Lana struggled herself into a sitting position. I’d gone over this scenario in my head several times while traveling home.

“It sounds serious,” Zane says.

If he only knew. My engagement ring is in my purse, which I clutch in my lap as I sit down next to Lana.

“I’ll be moving out soon,” I start.

“I thought you would stay here longer to help with the boys?” Lana wonders.

“I wish I could, but…”

Zane frowns as I hesitate with the next words. I find it easier to fetch the engagement ring from my purse and slide it on my finger.

“What the fuck!” Zane exclaims.

“I’m engaged.”

He runs his hand through his hair as Lana takes my hand to look at the ring.

“To who?” he says.

Before I can stop it, Foster’s name rolls off my tongue.

My brother stands up so quickly that his office chair slams into the wall behind him. “That asshole? You’ve been secretly dating him and never said a word?”

“It just happened.”

“Are you pregnant?”

“Zane!” Lana yells.

“I’m not pregnant. He loves me.”

“I find it hard to believe that he loves anything other than himself.”

“Please don’t say that,” I protest. “He’ll be your brother in law in a few months. Can you try to accept him?”

Zane pulls his seat back and sits down. “I’m not sure I can. He’s a selfish bastard, and I thought you said he wasn’t very nice to you.”

“I did, but he changed. We’ve been having a lovely time.”

“He’s too old for you.”

“Age isn’t a boundary when you’re in love.” I couldn’t believe the crap I was spewing from my mouth. It makes me feel like shit to lie to Zane and Lana, but a scenario I would need to repeat to my parents and friends.

“Jesus Christ. We’re going to be related to that asshole.”

“Zane!” Lana said. “Stop it.”

“I’m sorry. This will take some getting used to.”
