“How would we put this in motion?”

“We would announce our engagement. We can make up a story about dating in private.”

“I was dating someone a few months back.”

“Then we can say we started dating after that.”

“But my brother bailed me out from getting evicted, and I moved into his place. Zane will wonder why I didn’t ask you for help.”

Foster sighed. “Make up an excuse. You wanted to do it yourself.”

“This will be more complicated than I thought.”

“Whichever way it works, we must be married by the second week of September. We have two months to plan our wedding. I can ask you to marry me next week.”

“I’m not sure people will believe our story.”

“I don’t give a shit. The only person who needs to believe it is my father. He wants an heir to the Black name and needs to think I’m well on my way.”

“I need time to think.”

“Would you like lunch? I can order in.”

“I doubt I can eat.”

I push back from the table to rise, but Foster gently grips my wrist.

“Don’t let the details overwhelm you. This will work if you play the part. You’ll come out of it financially better off than you went into it.”

“When do you need to know?”

“As soon as possible, preferably no later than the end of the week. We have a tight schedule, and we need to get our story straight.”

Foster let me go, and I take the contract with me as I exit his office. As I had that morning, I am unable to work as I ponder my future for the next eighteen months. By late afternoon, I’d gone over the contract several times, and my mind is made up. I would become Mrs. Paige Black. The only worry I have is that our plan will go awry, and my family will find out. The last thing I want is to disappoint them.
