“Does that mean you’re not interested?”

The money would mean a lot to me and in eighteen months, and I would own an apartment of my choosing. It would make me financially secure. But would my emotions be secure?

“What about my job?”

“You couldn’t work for me after our divorce. In fact, I think you should quit after we get married.”

“And what the hell would I do all day? I’d be bored.”

“Volunteer or take up a hobby. My wife shouldn’t work.”

“My brother dislikes you,” I add.

“He has no reason to. I didn’t think investing in Eltech was financially sound. I was protecting my assets.”

“But Eltech is doing well.”

“It is, and I’m happy for your brother.”

“He’ll be your brother in law. You might have to see him on holidays.”

“I don’t celebrate holidays that often. During my childhood, holidays were unpleasant.”

“How so?”

“They were more formal and for show to my father’s colleagues. They’re a waste of time.”

My heart clenches. I had such a happy childhood. There were always big gatherings on holidays. “What about birthdays?”

“Same thing. I prefer to let mine go by without much pomp or circumstance. It’s simply another year in my life.”

“Christ, that’s a horrible attitude to have.”

“But it’s all I know.”

I pause. “I have a lot to think about.”

“Do you want to go home?”

“I’d rather sit at my desk. If I come home early, Lana will wonder why.”

“Your sister in law?”

“Yes. You’ll meet her.”

“Maybe not,” he counters.

“Can I offer an addendum to the contract?”

“If you must?”

“Part of marriage is accepting one’s family. Can you at least share a holiday or two with mine?”

“Will it make your decision easier if I say yes?”

“It might.”

“Consider this; if you sign the contract tomorrow, by Wednesday, you’ll be debt-free.”
