“Then we’re to be married on or about the fifteenth?”

“Thereabouts. I prefer we don’t have a big wedding.”

My face falls, and I look down. “I always thought I would.”

“This is business. Save it for when you marry someone you love.”

I swallowed hard. “Will we have a honeymoon?”

“For show purposes, yes. I own several homes around the country. You can pick which one you want to visit. We’ll take a week, but work doesn’t stop for me.”

“I understand. This is business.”

Foster went through each page of the document. A full-page was devoted to how I was to act in public as the loving, respectful wife.

“Are you sure I can’t date?” I joke when we get to the part about no dating during our marriage.

Foster frowns. “Your job is to make it seem as if we’re in love. A committed couple.”

“You expect me to go without sex for eighteen months?”

“I’ll be doing the same. I won’t forsake our marriage vows. If you require sex, I can provide it.”

“An act of cold satisfaction? I think I’d prefer a vibrator.”

“Suit yourself. It’s your choice.”

The last page stated what I would receive for my participation. My eyes bulge at the figures.

“Two hundred and fifty thousand just for signing this contract?”

“The money will be deposited in your account on the first business day after you sign the papers.”

“You’ll pay off my credit cards and school loans? They’re quite high.”

“I’m aware.”

“How?”

“It wasn’t hard to find out your debts. You owe eighty-two thousand in loans for your schooling as well as twenty-four thousand on your credit cards. You really should be more financially responsible.”

“I agree, and this will help toward that.”

I read to the bottom of the page. At the conclusion of our marriage, I would receive five hundred thousand dollars in cash and the purchase of an apartment. I would also retain any gifts and clothing purchased during our time together, as he said earlier.

“This is quite a lot.”

“You’ll be set once we divorce. I want to know you’re secure.”

“Financially, maybe.”

Foster stares at me. “But not emotionally?”

“I couldn’t say.”

“You don’t have to sign.”

I turn the document back to the first page and lean back in my chair. “I find it hard to believe you can’t find anyone else.”
