He presses a kiss to the top of my head. “Because I had hope,” he repeats.

Foster moves the hair from my neck and kisses along the sensitive flesh. I shiver, fully knowing that if he got me started, we would miss our flight. I push him away, and he laughs.

“You know what you’re doing,” I warn.

“I do, Mrs. Black. I love my wife.”

“You’re trying to change my mind. We need to get back to the city.”

“Promise you’ll call my mother tomorrow. She misses you.”

I fold a t-shirt and place it in my suitcase before answering, “I also miss her.”

“You know what this means?” he prompts.

“What does it mean?”

“She’ll start talking about children. She wants a grandchild.”

“I’m not sure I want to get pregnant yet. We need to know each other for real this time. I’m not going through this again.”

“Marriage?”

“The whole mess. I don’t want another marriage.”

Foster rubs sheepishly at the back of his neck. “Then the only thing we can do is work on the one we have. I love you.”

“And I need to get back to New York to spend some of your money,” I reply lightly.

“Spend away. The first thing we’ll do is get new wedding rings.”

I wrinkle my nose. “Why? I have my old rings.”

“I don’t want your old rings. This is a new beginning.”

I roll my eyes as I zip my suitcase. “You’re ridiculous.”

“I’m not,” Foster insists. “I want only good memories from now on.”

“And we will have them.”

“I hope so,” he mumbles before leaving the room.

I hope for the same too because we’ve experienced enough strife to last a lifetime. When I emerge from the bedroom, lunch has arrived. It will be the final meal we are sharing in Turks and Caicos… for now.

I gently stroke Foster’s scruffy face. He turns his head away from me, but I continue.

Without opening his eyes, he says, “Sweetheart, if you don’t stop, I’m going to make you a participant in the mile-high club.”

“Bullshit,” I call. “Those bathrooms are too small.”

Foster glances at me. “You want to try? I promise to make you come.”

I scowl at the thought of being cramped. “As romantic as that is, I’ll pass.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive.”
