The crew members disappear behind a door at the front of the plane, and Foster begins to unbutton my long coat. I slapped his hands away.

“Don’t treat me like a child.”

He presses his nose against my cheek. “Not a child, my wife.”

“We’ll be divorced soon. I’ll no longer be Mrs. Black.”

Foster chews on his cheek. “Maybe not.”

“Don’t even tell me the divorce papers were fake.”

“They’re real, but I asked my attorney not to file them.”

“Why did you even bother to send them to me if you had no intention of filing them?”

“Hope. I had hoped you would come back to me.”

I remove my coat, and Foster hangs it in a closet near our seats. “You know what your problem is?”

He clears his throat. “I’m sure you’re going to tell me whether I want to know or not.”

“You’re controlling and obnoxious. You can’t play with people’s hearts.”

Closing the distance between us, he kisses my cheek, running his lips along my jaw. “I only want to play with one heart.”

Not giving in, I sit down and fumble with my belt. “Maybe my heart doesn’t want to be played with. I want to be loved, not controlled.”

Foster occupies the seat next to me and reaches over to help finish securing my belt before his own. “I want to claim your heart. I want to love you the way you deserve to be loved.”

“You promised me that before and hurt me.”

The engines starting up startle me. A thought comes to me a few seconds later—in a few hours, we would be on the warm sandy beaches of Turks and Caicos. I couldn’t wait even though I had nothing to wear.

“I’ll make you a new promise. I swear to protect your heart.”

I snort. “You mean to repair the pieces you broke apart?”

“Can we get past this?”

“I have no choice since you’re kidnapping me. It’s not like I’m going to strap on a parachute to escape.”

Foster stares at me before laughing as the plane taxies down the runway. As we lift off, he massaged my neck, which causes me to close my eyes. He always knew how to make me feel good.

Foster wakes me up by kissing to my neck and sucking on my earlobe. For a minute, I forgot where I am, and then it all comes back to me.

“When are we landing?” I ask with a yawn.

“In an hour and a half.”

“Why didn’t you let me sleep longer?”

“Because I have a surprise for you.”

“Huh?”

A minute later, the two female attendants appear with a rolling tray. On it are chocolate-covered strawberries, champagne, cheese, crackers, and pate.

“Good, I’m starving. I haven’t eaten since lunch.”
