They set the food on a pull-out table in front of the long leather couch just off to our left before disappearing behind the door again. Foster unbuckles my belt, his hand skimming over my thighs.

“Don’t even think about it,” I snap.

“A guy can give it the old college try, can’t he?”

“And fail. As I said before, you’re going to have to work for it.”

Foster wets his lips. “I’ll do whatever I need to.”

“You can try.” If I had a brain in my head, I would’ve told him to go fuck himself after what he did. But my heart wants what it wants—Foster. I run my hand through his hair, gently tugging. “You need a haircut.”

He smiles. “So my wife tells me.”

“I wish it were that easy.”

Foster frowns but holds his hand out for me to take. He leads me to the couch, and after I am seated, he picks up a piece of gouda cheese for me. I go to take it with my hand, but he pushes it away.

“No, let me feed you.”

“You’re asking too much.”

Foster’s eyes plead with me, and I give in, opening my mouth for him to pop the cube inside.

“Ouch!” he yelps when I bite at the tip of his finger.

I ignore him and dive into the food, devouring several cubes of cheese, crackers, and strawberries. Foster pours a glass of champagne for me before he pours one for himself.

“What should we toast to?” he asks.

“I’m not sure there is a reason to toast.”

“To new beginnings,” he says with a frown, clinking his glass against mine. “My mother tells me you’ve been avoiding her.”

I study the piece of cheddar I’m holding. “I didn’t want to; I had to.”

“She’s very upset we broke up. She blames me.”

I pop the cheese into my mouth, chewing before I answer him. “As she well should. It’s your fault.”

“I can change. I already have.”

“You’re embroiled in a mess with the New Jersey project. Once we get back, you know you won’t be the man I want you to be—the man I fell deeply in love with.”

“I will. I promise.”

I scoff. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

“I’ve turned the project over to Victor.”

The news makes me pause. “Your vice president? Why?”

“Because you mean more to me than it does. He can handle it. Besides, I won a victory today in court. The Robertsons are liable. We located documents that indicate how they knew about the contamination.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means I plan to bankrupt them with lawsuits unless they return the money I paid for the property and reclaim ownership. It’s a mess they created. I won’t waste another minute worrying about it.”

“Is this why you came after me? I haven’t heard from you in two months.”
