“Then why didn’t you end it then? Why did you continue?”
“He threatened me. He said if I made him look like a fool, I would pay for it. Declan said he needed me by his side.”
“Lana, what happened to you? What happened to the woman that I remember? The woman that had her own free will?”
“She’s gone with a slew of bad mistakes.”
“You can get her back. You just have to be strong.”
“If I leave him, I get nothing. I have nothing.”
“What about your apartment?”
“I sold it long ago. I wasn’t sure I would be back in New York. I spent the money for the move to Los Angeles. I was foolish and didn’t work for several months.”
“And your parents?”
“My father told me not to muck this up. He has some business dealings with Declan.”
“But he’s an attorney.”
“Yes, one that gets paid handsomely for helping my asshole husband hide things. I’m embarrassed. I always thought my father was the picture of morality.”
“Declan is dirty, and if things work out, he will be exposed.”
I sit down on the couch next to Lana to comfort her by rubbing her back. Being so close to her is hard, but she needs my support. Her scent is torture on my senses, making me long for her. She places her head on my chest and her hand on my stomach, her fingers slide in between the buttons of my shirt, caressing the flesh underneath.
“Lana, I miss you,” I whisper.
“Zane, I want you. I can’t stop thinking about you.”
This is news to me since she cut me off the last time we made love. All she had to do was break it off with Declan, and we could have been together.
“You gave me up for him.”
“You’re always with me. You know that.”
I do because she’s still wearing the locket though it’s on a much longer chain that’s below the neckline of her dress. I gently push her off me and grasp the chair, pulling it out from where it’s hidden.
“I want to be with you, not just in spirit. Do you know what you do to me? It’s hell being away from you. You need to make a decision, him or me?”
“How could you think I would choose him? It’s always been you!”
“You already did. You chose him over me, and you ripped my heart out of my chest. I fucking love you, Lana. There will never be anyone else. Don’t you realize if you don’t come back to me that you’re putting me in exile? I have no place to go.”
“I want to leave him. I do. I should have left him long ago, but I was weak. I let everyone tell me what to do.”
“Suppose I lose Eltech? I can’t give you everything you deserve.”
“I don’t care. I’d live in a grass hut with you on the beach. A studio apartment with noise all around us. As long as I have you.”
I slam my mouth on hers, forcing my tongue inside. I want to consume her. Our hands are all over each other, and I’m pulling her onto my lap to straddle me. Her hands tug at my hair, and I feel her smile against my lips.
“What’s funny?”
“You need a haircut, but I like having something to grab onto.”
“You better be prepared because when I get done with you tonight, you’re going to be grabbing a lot of things, like the couch arm, the desk, my cock.”
