“You want to tell me?”

“I’m not sure if it will work, but give me some time to make some calls. I’ll try to get back to you tomorrow.”

“Don’t take too long, or I might not have any employees left.”

“I’ve been waiting to best this asshole ever since he stole the river development project from me. Bastard paid off some of the city officials. I can’t prove it, but one of my contacts alluded to that fact. He likes to play dirty. Let’s show him we can play dirty too.”

“If you help me, I’m not sure I can pay you back.”

“Zane, I don’t require payment. Just the satisfaction of stabbing that son of a bitch is enough. If my plan works, it will be even more delicious when I’m done.”

We rose from the couch, and I shook his hand then pulled him into a hug. If he worked this out, I would consider him family.

I’m fucking giddy. Jordan called me an hour ago to explain his plan and that the person who was going to be helping would be at his office tomorrow. Until he called, I was pacing my office most of the day and ignoring any current work I had. Now, I couldn’t sit still as I thought about how the plan would fall into place. It just might work.

It was after five when I finally settled into my chair to go through emails that I had left unread. A knock on the door startled me since most of the staff except a few stragglers had left for the day. I had even sent Jan home when I usually asked her to stay when I worked late. There was no reason for her to be here since I had nothing for her to do. I called out to the person on the other side of the door to enter and was shocked by who it was. Lana.

I stood as she came through the door. She was wearing a gray shift dress with a low cut top. I looked hungrily at her cleavage, but a glance at her worried face told me there was something wrong.

“Why are you here? Is something wrong?”

My voice was harsher than I meant it to be. I hadn’t seen her in two months, and I was angry that she denied me her presence even though I wanted it that way.

“I need to tell you something.”

I crossed my arms to hide my shaking hands, “So speak.”

“Declan knows.”

“Knows what?”

“That we had sex. He hasn’t said it directly, but the things he does and says make me believe that he knows.”

“Lana, I’m sure he does. He’s trying to destroy Eltech.”

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry.”

“I’m working on a plan. If it works, he’s dead in the water.”

“Please be careful. Declan gets what he wants, always.”

“Like you? He wanted you and look,” I point to the thick diamond-encrusted wedding ring around her finger.

“Our marriage is a sham. It’s not the marriage I wanted. He wants me for show. We barely had sex on our honeymoon, and he cut it short like it meant nothing to him to be with me.”

“You looked happy in the pictures I saw.”

Her eyes widen, “You saw them?”

“Your face is splashed all over the tabloids. You couldn’t stop smiling.”

She drops down onto the couch in the corner of my office as if the weight of the world were on her shoulders.

“It’s a lie. Declan is cheating on me. He thinks I don’t know about the little tart he’s keeping in a luxurious apartment not far from The Plaza.”

“When did you know?”

“Before we were married.”
