She doesn’t answer me as she walks away.
Chapter 10
Monday, and I can’t stop smiling. I get up extra early and run on the treadmill in the building gym. March has returned, and it’s cold and blustery. Only a few more days to go until April appears. I shower and dress quickly, hopping the subway to the office instead of my usual cab. I want to be around people.
I’m sitting in my office drinking coffee and reading the paper when Lucian comes in. I haven’t spoken to him since Saturday night, and after Lana left with Declan, I was glowering.
“Is it safe to talk to you?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be?”
“You’re kidding, right? When I left you, I thought you were going to spit nails.”
“I got over it.”
“Which means what?”
“I spoke to Lana yesterday.”
“Where?”
“In the park.”
I tell him the entire story of what transpired the day before and how Lana and I are going to be friends.
“Don’t take offense to this, but are you fucking kidding?”
“What? Why would you say that?”
“You are in way too deep. Call and tell her that you can’t be friends with her.”
“But I want to be.”
“She put you in the friend’s zone. Meanwhile, you’re thinking about how you can get her naked. It’s suicide. You’re playing with fire.”
“I’ll admit, I want to seduce her into bed, but I won’t. If she wants me, then she’ll let me know.”
“I got a few words for you, Declan Blair.”
“The guy has been married three times. You think even if their marriage happens that it’s going to last long?”
“So you’re going to wait out their marriage? How fucking long do you think that will be? You’re not getting any younger.”
“I don’t care. There is no one else for me but her.”
“That’s because you haven’t tried.”
“Because I know she’s the one.”
“You’re hopeless.”
“You’ll see how fast it will happen. The guy’s last two marriages lasted two years and two months in total. His second marriage lasted eleven months and third less than a year and a half. I like those odds.”
“So you think they’ll get married and after a year they call it quits?”
“Declan is rich and has a wandering eye. He’ll find someone younger, prettier, although I don’t know how much better you can do than Lana.”
“Your plan is fucked up, and by the time it happens, you’ll be an emotional wreck. Go back to Dr. Amundsen.”
