“Zane, you can’t touch me.”

“I can’t resist. It’s so hard to be around you and not touch you. Maybe being friends is wrong.”

“Please. Don’t you think it’s hard for me too?”

“Lana, you have someone that you love. I have someone I love, but I can’t have.”

“I’m sorry about that. I’m so sorry I can’t give you what you want.”

“I need to finish my run. Would you like to join me?”

“Yeah, I think that would be okay.”

We run together, and she keeps up with me even though I run hard and fast. In the end, I’m breathing heavy, and my heart is thudding in my chest. I put my hands on my thighs as I wait to catch my breath. Lana doesn’t seem as affected as I am.

“Do you always run that way?”

“Only when I’m frustrated.”

“I guess that’s my fault.”

“It is, but I’ll deal with it.”

She bends over to retie her sneaker, and the locket slips out of her shirt.

“That’s a nice,” I reach over to hold it in my hand, and she pulls away.

“It’s sentimental. I don’t let many people touch it.”

“You don’t take it off either. I noticed it at the fundraiser and in a few pictures on the internet.”

“You were checking up on me?”

“I’m not going to lie. I found your picture announcing your engagement, and I looked on the internet for others. I was curious.”

“You sure you weren’t stalking me?”

“Lana, if I was going to stalk you, I would find out where you’re staying and follow you around. Remember, I own my company. I can do what I want, and that includes not going into work. I promise I’m not stalking you.”

“I have to go. Declan will be back from the office at two, and I need to get ready for lunch with my parents.”

“Uh, that’s another thing I wanted to talk to you about. Your father hates me. What is he going to think of us being friends?”

“I’m an adult. I don’t need to ask his permission who I should be friends with.”

“He’s protective over you. He threw me out of his office when I came looking for you after you first left.”

“He told me. I was suffering, and he was angry.”

“Alicia also gave me hell. I saw her at Clancy’s a few months after.”

“She never told me.”

“She told me to leave you alone. I wanted what was best for you, so I gave up on us. I’m sorry I made such a mess. I want you to be happy.”

“I want the same for you. You deserve that. Find someone that will do that for you.”

“I already have.”
