She walked away, and I followed until we came to an empty bench with few people around. I didn’t want people hearing our conversation. As a gentle breeze blew, I caught her scent, and it was incredible. Even sweaty, she smelled fantastic.
“I want us to be friends.”
“You said that yesterday. Is this okay with Declan?”
“Yes. We discussed it, and he said it’s alright. I don’t have many friends left in the city. Most of them have moved to Westchester or Long Island. He knows I get lonely when he’s away.”
It was a familiar phrase. One she intimated to me when we were together. She hated being alone in our apartment.
“Why him, Lana?”
“He’s…he’s sweet and kind.”
“He’s also twenty-four years older with children almost the same age as you. Doesn’t that bother you?”
“They’re on their own. I don’t see them much.”
“Do you want children with him?”
“He said he’s done having children. He doesn’t want anymore.”
I felt sad for her because we talked about having a family, and I knew she wanted a child.
“How do you feel about that? I know you wanted them.”
“I’ve had to make compromises for Declan.”
“Has he made any for you?”
“What do you mean?”
“Lana, is he giving anything up to be with you, or is it all one-sided?”
“He works less than he had when we first met. That’s a compromise.”
“A small one as far as I’m concerned.”
“It’s no different than when we were together. You couldn’t stop at all. You didn’t want to compromise.”
“I did compromise as much as I could. I saw Dr. Amundsen after you left.”
“You did? Why?”
“I needed to know what I did wrong. I didn’t want to make the same mistake with the next woman.”
“Is there someone? Serena seems nice.”
“We’re not dating. The extent of our relationship is that she’s a fuck buddy.”
“But she was with you at the fundraiser.”
“And occasionally, an escort to functions that I attend when I need a date.”
“So you fucked her when you went home last night?”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
