“That’s not true.”

I decided to push her more. “Does he fuck you hard? Does he make you scream in ecstasy the way I did? Can he go all night?”

“Stop it, or I’m leaving.”

“Why did you want to talk if not to proposition me?”

“I want us to be friends. We’re going to live in the same city. I’m sure we will see each other a lot. I don’t want it to be awkward.”

“I can’t be friends with you because all I’ll be thinking of when I’m with you is ripping off your panties and shoving my dick inside your hot pussy. Unless that’s what you want,” I say with a sly smile.

Lana protests. “It’s not. I can’t give you that.”

“Then we’re done here,” I rise from my seat and walk away, leaving her flustered and clenching her legs together. I pull my jacket closed to hide my erection. Talking dirty while in her presence got me so hard that it hurts.

Back in the ballroom, speakers, one after another, are talking about the programs that the hospital offers and those that our donations will help fund. Serena leans over to me when I sit down.

“Where did you go?”

“Don’t worry about it.”

After the speakers finish, dessert is served. Declan is furiously typing on his phone, and I hear it chirp with incoming messages. He finally stands and addresses everyone at the table.

“Thank you for a lovely evening, but my fiancée is not feeling well. It was a pleasure.”

He shakes my hand and mentions getting together to discuss a project he would like Eltech to helm. I tell him to call me on Monday. I know I’m an evil bastard, and I grin to myself with satisfaction. Apparently, I got Lana so upset that she preferred not to come back to the table. I know it was wrong to do, but I’m angry, and she’s crazy if she thinks I want to be anything but lovers.

That night I wore out the usually insatiable Serena. I couldn’t get enough of her, especially when I closed my eyes and pretended that she was Lana. She slipped out of my bed before dawn, and when I woke up hours later, she was gone from my apartment.

I spent the rest of the morning on Sunday in my office, feeling guilty for what I did to Lana. I know I shouldn’t have. I needed to vent my frustration and decided to go for a run. It was the end of March, and we had a rare warm snap this weekend with the temperature at seventy-two. I hadn’t run outside since December, and it was nice not to don a cap and gloves.

I slipped on a pair of sweatpants and t-shirt, shoving my feet into my sneakers before I tied the laces tight. Central Park was right across the street, and I planned on pounding the pavement hard until I was dripping with sweat. I started at a slow pace and then weaved around some pedestrians as I accelerated.

It felt wonderful to be outdoors, and I let my mind go blank as the endorphins pumped through my blood, and my hair settled on my sweaty forehead. Up ahead, some slow-moving runners blocked my path, and as I went to go around them, I tagged the shoulder of a woman wearing yoga pants and a light pink t-shirt. She stumbled forward, and I stopped short to steady her before she fell.

“I’m-I’m sorry,” I stammered as I came eye to eye with the angry face of Lana.

“For what? Almost knocking me over or for last night?”

“Both, I guess. Are you okay?”

“What do you care?”

“Lana, I care,” I said through gritted teeth.

“I’m very upset with you. You hurt me, Zane.”

“This again!” I thundered.

“The truth hurts.”

I grasped her by the elbow to steer her away from the trail, ignoring the dirty looks other runners were giving us as they passed.

“Can we sit and talk?”

“I wanted to do that yesterday, but you were rude and wouldn’t listen.”

“I promise to listen now.”
