“At this time. Maybe one day I’ll be ready for a Mrs. Solano but not now.”

I take a deep pull on the Sam Adams I’m drinking, and that’s when I notice her. She’s standing around a high hat table with two friends, attractive in their own right, but I can’t take my eyes off her. This gorgeous young woman dressed in a gray shift dress with a plunging neckline. I can see more than a hint of her breasts. She scans the room, and for a minute, we meet, then she looks away. I’m captivated by her. I need to talk to her.

I can’t stop myself from watching her and pay little attention to the conversation going on at our table. When the waitress brings our food, I see the woman down what’s left of her wine and head for the door with her friends. I can’t let her go without speaking to her. As hungry as I am, food is forgotten, and I get up before she reaches the door walking towards her while smoothing my jet black hair to make sure it’s in place.

“Hi. Where are you going?”

“Home. Now, if you’ll excuse my friends and me.”

“I’d like to take you out.”

“Now that’s original,” she snorts.

“It’s as original as I get. I don’t mince words. I don’t have time. I’m Zane, by the way.”

“Well, Zane, I’d like you to get out of my way.”

“You won’t even tell me your name?”

“It’s Lana,” pipes one of the young women with her.

“Quiet, Anne.”

I extend my hand. “Pleased to meet you, Lana.”

She doesn’t take my hand and a look of amusement dances on her face.

“So, it’s like that?”

“I have a prior engagement.”

“Cancel it. Come out with me.”

“I don’t do things like that. I don’t just cancel the last minute.”

“If he wanted you so much, why isn’t he here?”

Lana pouts her lips. “He had to work late.”

“Shut up, Anne!”

“His loss is my gain. You should probably call him.”

“For what purpose?”

“To cancel. I insist you go out with me tonight.”

“Look, Zack. I want to go out tonight but not with you.”

“It’s Zane.”

“Whatever. Thank you for the invitation.”

She pushes past me, and her girlfriends give me a sympathetic look as they pass. A guy sitting at the bar dives his hand down, making a crashing noise. I give him a curt smile and head back to my table.

“She cut you off at the balls, huh?” Miguel says.

“I don’t give up so easily. I’m sure she’ll be back. I’ll keep coming here until I see her again.”
