“It states that since your marriage didn’t last a year, he wants you to pay for half the wedding. Do you have any idea what that figure would be?”

“A lot more than I can afford. Our wedding cost over three hundred grand. I didn’t want it all. Declan insisted. He said a girl only gets married once, and I should have whatever I wanted.”

“And you’re sure he said that?” Todd asked.

“Yes. I have witnesses, but they all work for Declan, so I’m sure they will have either a lapse in memory or lie.”

“It’s unreasonable for him to expect you to pay when he isn’t giving you anything from the marriage. We could go after some of his earnings during your few weeks of married life with him.”

“I have a prenup. I get nothing.”

“Prenups can be broken. I’ve done it before.”

“I don’t want anything but my freedom.”

“We could use the abuse angle. He injured you, and if he doesn’t want that released to the media, then he should think about taking the request for payment of half the wedding expenses out of the divorce, especially since he didn’t pay for the hospital visit.”

“You could try. Declan doesn’t like to be pushed.”

“He should have thought of that before he had his attorney write this ridiculous nonsense up. I’ll be in touch with his counsel and get back to you. I’m sure they’ll see it my way.”

We thanked Todd and left the office. I put my arm around Lana when we were in the elevator and felt her shiver.

“Sweetheart, don’t worry. He won’t have the upper hand.”

I wasn’t exactly sure if that was true, but at least we now had Todd to fight the battle. We went home and ate a light meal of sandwiches. Lana was dozing on the bed as I worked on my laptop next to her. I usually didn’t watch television, but tonight for some reason, I clicked it on with the remote during a break.

I flicked through channels, pausing on the news, and then continued. I was passing by one of the gossip channels when I heard the name Blair and stopped. I watched the story they were discussing. It had gotten out into the news stream that Declan was not only facing a divorce from Lane, whom he recently married, but that the board of D.G. Software was investigating him.

I put my laptop on the nightstand to concentrate. They showed pictures of the wedding, the honeymoon, and a couple of Sasha Sinclair, speculating that she might be the reason for the divorce filing. I smiled to myself, hoping that now that the story was out in the news cycle, it would make Declan eager to settle quickly and move on.

“Lana baby, wake up.”

“Wh, what’s the matter?”

“Look?” I point to the television.

She opens her eyes wide and stares at the screen, “Fuck! How the hell did they get the story?”

“Why are you upset? This is a good thing.”

“How is this good?”

“Because it’s out now. Journalists are going to dig for more juicy stuff.”

“And make me look like a gold digger. What’s going to happen when they find out I’m with another man? It will lead to all kinds of speculation. I’m sure Declan’s attorneys are on it right now. They’re going to spin it to make me look bad.”

“Lana, you did nothing wrong.”

“I fucked you while I was engaged and married to him. How is that not wrong?”

“He fucked Sasha while you were engaged and married.”

“It doesn’t matter. He filed the divorce papers. It makes it look like I’m the one at fault. This is a mess.”

“We can call Todd tomorrow and see what he says. I still think this is a good thing. Declan has too much going on right now that looks shady. We also have pictures from the private investigator. They can be leaked to the press.”

“That makes me look horrible. My husband is a newlywed and fucking another woman just weeks after we marry?”
