“Lana, what do you want me to say? That I’m sorry for seducing you?”
She softens, “It’s not your fault. We both had a hand in this. I couldn’t stay away, and neither could you. I’m sure it will be in the news soon about how we’re together. I hope you’re prepared.”
“I guess I’ll have no choice.”
I shut the television off, and Lana turned her back to me while I worked. I knew she was upset. A few minutes later, her phone began to play the tune “Wrapped Around Your Finger.”
“Don’t answer it. You don’t owe Declan anything.”
“I want to hear what he has to say.”
She swiped her phone and put the speaker on so I could hear the conversation.
“You fucking whore. You talked to the press?” he shouted.
“Fuck you, Declan. This is your fuck up. Don’t you dare put this on me.”
I was going to grab the phone from her, but she pulled it away.
“Getting a little bold these days, aren’t you? You won’t be once I get done with you. Have you signed the divorce papers? I want to be rid of your pathetic dumpy ass as soon as possible.”
“So you can find some other arm candy to escort you to your snooty parties? Why not just take Miss Sinclair?”
“I have no idea who that is.”
“The woman you were fucking behind my back? You don’t remember her, or you just didn’t think I did?”
“I wouldn’t need her if you weren’t such a cold fish in bed.”
“You’re a fucking control freak Declan. I wasn’t going to allow you to strap me to the bed, strike, and fuck me at your leisure. I was your wife, not your toy.”
“Did you think I chose you at random? I chose you because you were perfect for me to mold into what I wanted. The perfect society wife. But when I found out that you wouldn’t do what I wanted in the bedroom, I needed an outlet.”
“You could only get it up when you were abusing me, putting me down. I allowed you to do that, and I won’t let it happen anymore. I just want the divorce and to forget you.”
“I’ll give you the divorce, but you’ll never forget me. I won’t let you. And that piece of shit boyfriend of yours, he’s going to be sorry he crossed me. I’ll destroy him.”
“Are you sure about that, Declan? Maybe he’ll destroy you. Now stop contacting me, or I’ll have you arrested for harassment. If you need to speak to me, call my attorney.”
She presses the end call button before he can answer and smiles at me.
“I’m impressed.”
“Did you think I was going to fall apart? I’m done with Declan and his bullshit. I won’t allow him to hurt me anymore.”
“I’d still like one good shot at him.”
“He’s not worth it. He never was. Money can’t buy him the grace or class that you possess.”
The dominoes on Declan Blair’s table are starting to fall. The night after he called Lana, another news story broke about another woman that claimed she had Declan’s love child. Pictures were shown of the woman and baby who did look like the other Blair children.
He was also facing an inquiry by the SEC for some insider trading that they were investigating. Frankly, he deserved what he got. Maybe with all his entanglements, he would stay away from us. I hoped because I wanted to move on with my life with Lana. She deserved to be stable in her life.
Two days later, Todd Ashburn called my office to let me know that Declan’s attorney agreed to remove the paragraph about paying back half the wedding costs. Once he received the papers, he would read through the revised document and call us with any questions. With any luck, the documents would be filed by the start end of next week or even before.
I planned to give Lana the engagement ring I had been holding since we broke up years ago. Once we got the notification that the divorce papers had been registered, I was going to ask her to marry me. I wanted to move ahead with our lives as soon as possible. We had been waiting so long to be together.
My mother called me a day later after she saw another report calling me Lana’s mystery man. A few paparazzi were camped out in front of our building and snapped pictures of Lana and me walking hand in hand. I hadn’t told my parents we were back together yet.
