“You don’t understand. You never understand. He made me miserable, and I listened to you. I stayed with him.”

I could hear the caller on the other end. It was a man, and by deduction, I knew it was James.

“You already cut me off. I’ve always been treated differently than Alicia. You expect so much from me. I don’t think mother would agree. I want to talk to her.”

Lana started to cry and spoke through her tears, “So you’re saying if I don’t go back to Declan, you don’t want to see me anymore?”

I’d had enough, I ran to the bedroom and startled her. She dropped the phone on the floor, and I picked it up to listen to James berating Lana.

“Mr. Collins, this is Zane, you should shut your mouth. Your daughter has been through enough. You would prostitute her out so you can line your pockets? You’re sick.”

“I wouldn’t expect a man as dishonorable as yourself to know anything about my relationship with Declan Blair. You seduced my daughter away from her loving husband. She was a claimed woman.”

“You’re delusional. Your daughter was never attached to Declan as you think. Did you know he beat her? She didn’t call you. She called me to take care of her.”

“When? I didn’t know.”

“Because you make yourself unavailable, and you can’t offer Lana support of any type, even emotional. Do yourself a favor and get away from Declan as soon as you can. End all communications with him. He’s going down, and unless you want your name dragged through the mud, you’ll heed my warning.”

Lana kept looking at me as I spoke with her father. She made no move to take the phone from my hand.

“Let me talk to my daughter.”

“That’s over. I won’t allow you to upset her like she is. Know this, I plan on taking care of her better than any man has in her life. If you want nothing to do with her, then so be it.”

I hang the phone up and throw it on the bed, pulling Lana into my arms. She clings to me, bunching my shirt up in her fists.

“Sweetheart, don’t worry, your parents will come around.”

“They won’t. My father never liked you, Zane. What happened five years ago sealed the deal. If we marry, he will never see me again.”

“Then it’s his loss. He won’t see his grandchildren either. If he wants that, then I’m fine with it. You need to become the woman I first saw in Clancy’s. I want that fire back. I know it’s there.”

“I don’t know if she is. I want her back too. I want to be that woman again.”

“I have something for you.”

I gently pushed her back and took her by the hand. I had placed the roses on the foyer table and handed her the long white box.

“You bought these for me?”

“Of course. I’ll never take you for granted again.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t start dinner yet.”

“Get dressed. I’m taking you out to a casual dinner. Wear that dress that I love so much.”

I took the roses from her and gave her a little push towards the bedroom. I wondered if she knew which dress I meant. If she did, it would mean we were in sync. She didn’t disappoint me when she came out down the hallway wearing the peach sundress. It was old, but she must have kept it for a reason.

“This is the dress you meant?”

“Yes, so sexy. You’re sexy.”

I pressed a firm kiss to her lips, tasting the cherry lip gloss she had applied. Her perfume was making me heady. I pulled her close and stuck my hands under her dress to fondle her ass. She was wearing a thong, and as my hands touched her bare skin, my blood began to boil.

“Lana, I’m not sure we’re going to make it to dinner,” I whisper.

“Why?” she says innocently.
