“You know I would. I appreciate you supporting me. I don’t know what I would do if I had no family, especially when I was pregnant.”

“Chase should have been there for you, but I don’t blame him because he didn’t know.”

I sigh. “It was my stupid mistake, but we’re moving past it.”

We talk a bit more until JC comes home around five. He looks exhausted. I kiss him and tell him so.

He nods. “I’m seriously considering working for my father because I can’t keep this up. I went in at six, and I still haven’t caught up. I spoke to Vincent and told him he needs to get some more help for marketing.”

JC has been working for Barker and Perez for the last five years. Ever since he and Lexi decided to have Arabella, and to have Lexi stay home, he seems to be always drowning in work.

“Do you want to work for your father?”

“He’s mellowed out a bit, and he would pay me a lot more. Unless I can find someone that works like Lexi, I might have to choose to leave. When she was working with me, she took a lot of the burden off. I don’t have anyone who can match her.”

I wish I could work in marketing, but my degree is in biology, so I wouldn’t be able to help him. I’d take anything to get myself out of the uncomfortable situation at Nolan. We chat for a little while longer before I go to wake CJ around 5:30. I need to get home and pack for us both, then head to Chase’s apartment since we plan to leave from there in the morning. Chase told me that he keeps an SUV in a garage not far from his apartment. Another piece of information I wasn’t aware of.

After I feed CJ and pack, I realize that I have too much to lug to Chase’s. Even if I took a cab, it would be hard for me to handle it all, so I call him to let him know.

“Where are you?” he asks before I can say anything. “I thought you would be here by now.”

“I have a problem.”

“Is CJ okay? Are you?” he nearly shouts in alarm.

“It’s not that type of problem. I have too much stuff, meaning it will be complicated for me to carry everything and CJ, even if I get a cab.”

“That’s not a problem. I’ll come to you with the car, and we can pack everything tomorrow morning. Do you mind if I sleep at your place?”

“You’re kidding, right?”

“I just thought I’d ask. I’ll be there in a little while, depending on traffic. I love you.”

He hangs up, and I put my sleepy little man in his crib, where he falls asleep seconds after I lay him down. I’m glad I don’t have to upset him by taking him to Chase’s; it would make him cranky to rest.

For the first time in a few days, I’m starving. Going through my stores, I inventory my pantry to see if I can make some food. I have spaghetti and a jar of tomato sauce. After searching the freezer, I also find some meatballs that I made some time ago. Gathering everything, I prepare dinner. I’m certain that Chase hasn’t eaten since it’s barely after seven. He probably just got home from work not too long ago.

“Something smells delicious,” Chase says from the entryway.

Lost in my own world, time must have flown because his appearance startles me. With a hand over my heart, I tell him, “I’m making spaghetti with meatballs. I hope you haven’t eaten.”

“Not yet; I’m famished. Where is our boy?”

“I put him to bed. He was falling asleep when I got home.”

Chase kisses me, and I let him taste the sauce I doctored up with some spices. With a hum of approval, he heads to the nursery to see CJ. When he comes out, I have dinner ready, and I ask if he wants a glass of wine.

“Yes, please. Be sure not to drink too much this time.”

“Thank you, Dr. Pearce, for your input,” I say as I roll my eyes.

I set a bowl of spaghetti in front of him and watch as he puts a forkful in his mouth.

“Delicious,” he compliments. “How come you never cooked for me before?”

“I have to keep some air of mystery. Now you know my secret.”

“Even the jarred sauce is good. You spiced it up perfectly. These meatballs are fantastic too. Where did you learn to make them?”
