I glance at the clock and see that it’s past nine. I never sleep this late on a Saturday, mostly because CJ never lets me but also because I’m used to getting up early. I decide to take a long shower since I don’t have to worry for the time being.

Once the water is nice and hot, I spend the next twenty minutes shaving my legs and underarms, exfoliating with the loofah, and conditioning my hair. When Chase walks in, I’m in the living room, wrapped in my long terry robe, at which he sneers.

“I much prefer that short silky robe you have.”

“Oh, do you? Well, it’s at your place, so this will have to suffice.”

“CJ was talking up a storm this morning, and I think he said da.”

I hum. “He’s been saying ba, bub, and a few other sounds for a while now.”

“I swear I heard him say da as in dada.”

“Chase, I doubt it. He’s barely six months old yet.”

“Okay, but I think he said it.”

“Sweetie, he will say it eventually. He knows who his daddy is.”

Chase smiles at me, then hands over a large cup of coffee.

“I got bagels and donuts. I also fed CJ this morning. I gave him the bananas in the jar I found in the refrigerator and, of course, a bottle. He’s becoming quite the eater.”

“He’s going to be big and tall like you.”

Chase lifts CJ out of his stroller and puts him on his play mat. CJ begins to mess with one of the musical sounds, so Chase and I can have a conversation.

“How are you doing this morning?” I ask.

“I’m fine. Is there any reason I shouldn’t be?”

“You had that bad dream last night. Were you able to go back to sleep?”

“Yes, I slept fine,” he dismisses. “I occasionally have a bad dream here and there. It’s usually when I’m stressed out.”

“And are you?”

“I have a few concerns here and there.”

“Such as?”

“Your work situation and talking about my childhood.”

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pushed you to tell me.”

“Megan, I had to tell you. You want to know me, and that is part of my history. I want to keep an open dialogue with you.”

“Is there anything you want to know about me?”

“What school did you go to?”

“I attended UConn.”

“Really? I thought you would have attended a college in New Jersey.”

“Why? Because I lived there? What college did you go to?”

“Harvard and Harvard Med.”
