“We’re going to discuss it tonight.” She waits a beat before asking, “You want to tell me about you and Chase?”
I’m just about to answer when Johnny slides off the bench and goes running, screaming “UNTER” at the top of his lungs. Lexi is about to chase him down when Hunter appears from behind a group of people and scoops Johnny up in his arms. He’s wearing his soccer gear.
“Hey, how are my best sisters-in-law doing?”
“Tired. What are you doing here?” Lexi asks.
“Just got done with a game. Claude and Henri have a kid’s soccer clinic in a half hour. Do you want me to take this little ruffian off your hands?”
“Hunter, if you could do that, I would be eternally grateful. He is so naughty today.”
“Done!” Hunter swings Johnny up onto his shoulders and then kneels to kiss Arabella and then CJ.
“How’s Chase?” he asks me.
“I was asking Megan that. I’ll fill you in when you bring my hellion back to the apartment. Hopefully, your brother will be home by then.”
Hunter shakes his head. “He works too hard.”
“He knows. I’ll see you later.”
Hunter waves as he walks away with Johnny.
Lexi turns back to me. “Now, about Chase.”
“What do you want to know?”
“Any changes with your relationship?”
I smile widely. “Some.”
“I’m guessing they’re for the better.”
I tell my sister all about what transpired over the past couple of days and how CJ and I have been staying at Chase’s apartment. Lexi tells me that she isn’t surprised since she was pretty sure that he had feelings for me before it all went to shit. She also expresses her disappointment that I had to lie to her about Chase’s leaving.
“I’m sorry. I was embarrassed, and I should have told you the truth. And honestly, I still haven’t told you everything.”
“There’s more?”
“Yes. I should have come to you sooner.”
“What else is there?”
“Chase left because I told him I was in love with him. He couldn’t handle it. Our relationship was only supposed to be sexual.”
“It didn’t look that way to me. Chase seemed so possessive of you.”
“I thought so too. The more we were together, the deeper I fell in love with him. I thought I deserved his leaving. I hurt Lucian, and that was payback.”
“You think that it was payback for hurting Lucian? That’s ridiculous. You were in two different places. Rory told me that Lucian is married and happy anyway. You know when she marries Hunter, you’re going to have to see Lucian.”
“I know. I guess I’ll look like an asshole since I’m a single mother.”
“You’re not single if you’re with Chase, right?”
“No, but I know he’s skittish. He told me there are some things in his past he needs to tell me about. Things from his upbringing. I want to know, but I don’t want to push him.”
CJ, who I had placed back into his stroller after falling asleep, starts to cry, and I pick him to calm him.
