“I’d like to, but I need to change first.”
“Of course. We have to go back to Hunter’s to get ready anyway. Are you bringing Chase?”
I hadn’t thought about asking. I didn’t even know if he would be interested in going to a club with me.
“I need to ask if he wants to join us.”
Excusing myself, I head to the living room and call Chase over to me so no one can hear our conversation.
“Do you want to come to Vibes with us tonight?”
“It’s not my scene. I’m not much for clubs.”
“That’s fine.” I try to hide the disappointment in my voice.
“Megan, are you upset?”
“No. Why would you think that? We’re not dating, so I don’t expect much.”
“We are friends, though.”
“Yeah, I know. I don’t want to feel like a third wheel.”
“Maybe another time.”
Hunter’s cell rings, and I hear him talking about Vibes. Whoever it is, they’re going to join us. I hope it’s another guy, at least. I like Hunter’s friends. He hangs up and announces that Matty is joining us. Knowing he’s coming along puts me at ease.
“Matty’s going?” Chase asks.
“So what?”
“He wants to get in your pants.”
“Does that bother you?”
“It does if you sleep with him.”
“Chase, you don’t have to remind me of your rules.”
“Our rules. If I slept with someone else, you would want me to stop our arrangement, right?”
We’re interrupted by JC, who asks what we’re talking about. Voice tight, I tell him it’s nothing, and we all move to sit on the couch. Staying quiet, I’m not in the mood for contributing to the conversation. While I’m spacing out, Lexi pops back in and asks if I could help with Arabella, who needs a bath. I gladly agree because it gets me away from scrutiny from the men. From how I feel their gazes following me, I know they’re wondering why my demeanor has suddenly changed.
Distracted, I help Lexi undress Arabella before taking her to the bathroom together. I plop down onto the toilet seat cover while my sister bathes the baby.
“So, what’s got you so down? What did Chase say?”
“He doesn’t want me going out, especially since Matty is supposed to meet us.”
“Is he jealous?”
“He claims he isn’t, but you never know with Chase.”
“Megan, maybe it’s time for you to find someone that wants to settle down. You’re almost thirty, and you should consider it.”
“I did consider it and look where it got me. Jeremy blindsided me. I don’t want any part of that.”
“Jeremy was an asshole. He wanted to show you off on his arm. Did he ever love you?”
