“Her opinion changed. She told me she realizes what a good mother you are. She was just upset that you didn’t initially have a baby until after you were married. You know she can be a bit old fashioned.”

“I’m sorry you had to come up here to rescue me.”

“That’s what family is for,” she asserts.

“Who’s taking care of Johnny and Arabella?”

“Hunter and Rory. They send their best wishes. You know they consider CJ to be their nephew.”

“I appreciate that.”

The doctor walks in and asks everyone to clear out so he can check me. My head still feels like it’s ready to split, and I’m still dizzy. He tells me that he wants to hold me for at least another day. I want to go home, but not feeling like this. I ask if he knows anything about Chase, but he says no. I can ask at the desk.

Chapter 21

Two days later and with help, I’m dressed and ready to go home. Lexi had gone out and bought some clothing in my size as well as CJ’s. They let me feed him after the nurse changed his diaper. The doctor checked him out and said he was good to go home without any long term effects from his ordeal.

I need to talk to Chase before I go back to the house to retrieve my things. I send Emma and JC down to the cafeteria with CJ, then ask Lexi to take me in my wheelchair to the front desk, so I can find out what room Chase is in. The nurse at the desk tells me where he is, and Lexi wheels me to his room, which is just down the hall from where I was.

Lexi leaves me so we can have some privacy. He looks horrible. The right side of his face is severely bruised and bandaged. He has a couple of tubes hooked up to his arm. He’s asleep, but when I touch his leg, Chase groans and opens his eyes.

“Megan,” he rasps.

“How are you?”

“Not good. What happened after I passed out?”

“I can tell you when we get home.”

“I’m not going home. I’m staying here for a while.”

“Do you want me to stay with you?”

“No. You go home. What happened? Is CJ alright?”

I tell him my part of the story, followed by what happened to CJ.

“Oh, my God. He fucking tried to murder my son?!” he cries.

“What exactly was the pact about?”

Chase inhales deeply. “When my father became bitter and abusive after his accident, Barrett and I would escape to a treehouse we built when we were kids. We talked about never having children because the Pearce name was tainted. He told me we should make a pact. I never thought he meant it.”

“So why would he try to kill you if you didn’t have children in Atlanta?”

“Before he knocked me out at the house, he told me that my first marriage went against the pact. That he had to take me out before I made a mistake. He meant to kill me with that car, and when he found out I was getting divorced, there was no need for him to come after me again.”

“So, why did he?”

“Amberlynn. He’s been stalking me and found the newsletter about my engagement. When I moved to New York, he was already watching, and that was how he found out I had a child, so we had to die.”

Growing sick, my urge to vomit rises, but I hold it down and wait for Chase to continue.

“I fell asleep on the chair while I was reading. CJ’s crying woke me up, and he was no longer in his playpen. I ran inside, and there was Barrett with CJ strapped in his carrier. He put CJ down and came at me. I don’t know where he got it, but he had a bat, and he swung it hard. I went to the floor and passed out. When I came to, you were in the house, confronting him.”

“They’re looking for him,” I cut in. “He’ll be charged with three counts of attempted murder when they find him. The detective told me they aren’t releasing information to the news to protect us. If Barrett is still alive, he could come after us again.”

“Something tells me he’s not.” I could detect a note of sadness in his voice.
