Lexi has been pushing me about using a delivery service since it’s a lot easier than lugging all the packages from the supermarket. Maybe I’ll try it. It would make my life so much simpler, and Chase would stop bitching about me not having food in my apartment.

When I get back to my place, I sit CJ on his play mat and get my laptop before settling on the couch. From what Lexi told me, Spivey’s grocery is a few blocks away, and they have same-day delivery for a few bucks extra, so I go to their website and join their service. It takes me forty-five minutes to put the order in, but at least when Chase comes over tonight, he’ll have a hot dinner waiting.

Since it’s so gloomy, I decide to make a beef stew with some homemade French bread. I haven’t baked in a long time, but I lug out my bread maker from the pantry and prepare the dough. It’s time that I show Chase what I can do in the kitchen.

My groceries arrive by the afternoon after I finish cleaning and laundry. CJ is napping, so that allows me to get the stew cooking. It should be ready by the time Chase comes home. I feel like the perfect little housewife even though I’m not. By 7:25 PM, Chase is walking through the door. I’ve fed, bathed, and put CJ to bed, so it’s just us.

“What smells so good?” he asks with a grin.

“Dinner. I made beef stew and fresh bread.”

“You baked bread?”

“Yes. It’s a gloomy day, and I thought it would hit the spot.”

He takes me into his arms and plants a giant wet kiss on my cheek.

“What was that for?”

“I love fresh-baked bread.”

Yet another fact I file that away for future reference.

“I made homemade stew too.”

“I see that. Did you go to the supermarket today?”

“Nope. I ordered them to be delivered from Spivey’s. Lexi uses them, so I thought I’d try. They delivered by the afternoon, so you can’t complain that my refrigerator is empty.”

I ladle beef stew into two bowls and place one in front of Chase, then slice the fresh bread and lay it on a plate. He takes a slice and inhales its aroma.

“You’re right. This is going to hit the spot. Today was a busy day, but I do have some good news. I got Sunday off, and one of the doctors agreed to take half my shift on Friday so we can leave for Cape Cod when I get home.”

“We might be traveling in the dark, though, right?”

“Only for about a half-hour. If the traffic isn’t heavy, we can make it to the Cape by 8:30 or so.”

When Chase tastes the beef stew, I’m not sure if the look on his face is good or bad.

“This is fantastic,” he compliments. “I’m definitely marrying you now. I don’t care if you’re a bank robber or into any other illegal activities, as long as you can cook.”

“Very funny, Chase. I’ll have you know that I don’t do either.”

“I was kidding. Oh, I called an attorney today about changing CJ’s last name. We have an appointment on Wednesday morning. I don’t have to be at work until noon that day.”

“What’s the rush?”

“No rush, but I want CJ to have my last name, so people know he’s my son.”

“Are you worried about what they’ll think because he has my last name right now?”

“No. Well yes. I don’t want questions.”

“Chase, he has my last name because I wanted to tell you, but I couldn’t figure out how. But I should have given him your last name because he’s your son.”

“What’s done is done, but his name can still be changed.”

“I want to pay for half of the cost.”
