He turns to me. “More than alright.”

Peeing stings when I go; I must be raw. Unfortunately, that’s going to limit our activity for a little while. When I’m done, and out, Chase is softly snoring. Once I slip back into bed, I put my head on his chest.

The next time I wake, it’s to the ringing of my cell phone. Chase is no longer in bed, and I hear the shower running. It’s almost 11 AM, and I’m sure that it’s my sister calling.

“Hello?” I ask, answering it.

“I was wondering when you were going to come to get CJ.”

“I’m sorry, busy night,” I explain with a laugh.

“I bet,” she replies.

I change the topic. “Was CJ a good boy?”

“Very, though he is still teething. It looks like one of his teeth cut the gum.”

“My poor baby. I think we’ll be over in an hour or two. Is that okay?”

“Sure. I’ll feed him lunch.”

Chase steps out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist and mouths the question of who’s on the phone. I tell him it’s Lexi. I speak to her for a few more minutes and then hang up.

“I guess we should have gotten up earlier,” Chase says.

“We might not have gotten any sleep if that was the case.”

In response, he bends to kiss me. Leaning back, he hungrily eyes my breasts, which have been emancipated from under the sheet after I sat up.

“No,” I assert.

He peers at me with a raised brow. “I didn’t say anything.”

“You didn’t have to. I know that look.”

“You’re hard to resist.”

“Well, CJ cut one of his teeth,” I say, switching topics. “I think once the other front one comes in, we should be free of his teething for a little while. Maybe we can go to Cape Cod next weekend.”

He shrugs. “I’m on the schedule for Friday until six in the evening. Then I have to work at eleven in the morning on Sunday, but maybe I can trade. I’m going to owe a lot of people.”

“It will be worth it. I’d love to see the house.”

With a nod, he says, “I’ll see if I can make arrangements for a change of schedule on Monday.”

While I get up and pad into the bathroom, naked, he gives me a smoldering look. By noon, I’m dressed, and we’re ready to get CJ. I miss my little man.

Chapter 19

We end up having a wonderful weekend together. CJ was in better spirits when we pick him up, and on Sunday morning, his other upper tooth broke the gum. For Labor Day, we spend the day all over the city. Central Park had all kinds of fun things going on for children and adults.

The street fair that I saw Barrett at was still going on, so we went to that too. I was apprehensive that we would see him again, but there was no sign of his presence. Just to be certain, I kept an eye out for him when Chase wasn’t paying attention. I didn’t want him to know that I was still worried.

We then spent the entire weekend at Chase’s place. It’s more spacious than mine, and I could get used to the idea of living there. But that’s a discussion a few months away from happening.

Chase didn’t mention moving in and getting married after our night together, and I’m glad because I don’t want to be pressured into making a decision. Since I’m off for the next few weeks, we decided that when Chase has a free day during the week, we’re going to an attorney to see about CJ’s name change. He should have his father’s last name.

The Tuesday after Labor Day is gray and threatening the city with rain. Chase had to leave for the hospital for a 7:00 AM shift. I’m bummed that I won’t be spending the day with him, but I have things to do at my apartment. Laundry awaits, and I need to do some grocery shopping, which I only plan to do if it doesn’t rain.
