By the third week of December, I was feeling run down and constantly nauseous. I was exhausted and just had to make it through two more weeks before I left for vacation. I woke one morning and the minute I sat up, I had to run to the bathroom to throw up.

A stomach bug had been going around the office, and I figured I might have caught it. I worked from my hotel and spent the day eating crackers and drinking ginger ale. By the next morning, I felt better until I got out of bed. The same process occurred as I buried my head in the toilet and threw up.

We were in the midst of preparing for the release of Pet’s Day Off and I couldn’t spare another sick day. After I ran to the bathroom for the third time, Luna followed me into my office.

Her face had worry written all over. “Are you okay?”

“I feel miserable. This virus is knocking me out.”

She frowned. “Miss Stone, are you sure it’s a virus?”

I looked into her brown eyes. “What are you asking?”

“Well, you told me it’s only in the mornings.”

“I’m not sure I’m following you.”

“I had the same thing during my pregnancies.”

“I doubt that’s the case. I’m on birth con…”

Holy shit, when was the last time I took my pills? I grabbed my purse and came up with my pills. I hadn’t gotten a refill, and the container was empty. I clapped my hand over my mouth.

“Could it be possible?” she asked.

I nodded, having a sick feeling in my stomach and not from morning sickness.

“I guess I should go to the doctor.”

“I can give you the name of mine. She’s excellent.”

“I’d appreciate that. And please keep this quiet. The last thing I need is rumors going around the office.”

“I would never reveal your business.”

“Thank you.”

Luna left and came back a few minutes later with her doctor’s name and number on a yellow sticky note. When she was gone, I called for an appointment. They had a cancellation today if I could get there by noon. I said I could and grabbed my purse as I ran out the door.

“They have a cancellation. I’ll be back as soon as I can,” I called as I passed by Luna’s desk.

“Good luck.”

“Thanks.”

I sat in Doctor Nicole Daly’s office looking around at the women who were there. Some were in the stages of late pregnancy. I wasn’t sure if I wanted this or how I was going to tell Austin. The doctor was running late, and I put my head back against the wall and dozed. A nurse called my name, waking me.

The nurse took my vitals, told me to change into a gown, and I waited for the doctor to come into the examination room. Dr. Nicole Daly came in a few minutes later; she was a small woman with blonde hair and stormy gray eyes behind stylish wire-framed glasses. She introduced herself, and I explained my situation.

“Let’s have you give us some urine and blood.”

I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised, but the test revealed that I was pregnant. I hadn’t been careful. Dr. Daly wanted to calculate when I got pregnant, but I knew exactly when it happened. She took me to the ultrasound room to get a picture.

“There’s your baby,” she said as she pointed to a tiny little spot on the screen.

I squinted at the spot. “That looks like an almond.”

“It does, doesn’t it?” she said with a smile.
