He removes his shirt from his waistband and wipes at the sweat on his chest and stomach. It’s making me heated more than I am from the weather. Why is he having this effect on me?

“And what happened with Megan?”

“They didn’t go home together if that’s what you want to know. She did ask Hunter to help her move some stuff to her new apartment next week. I told her I would help if she could get you there, too.”

“Next weekend, I’m not sure what we’re doing. I’ll let you know.”

“We should hang out tonight. Is Noah coming back?”

“Not until tomorrow. Do you think it’s a good idea to hang out?”

“Though I would love to, I’m not going to eat you.”

“Fuck, JC, stop. You can’t say things like that.”

I’m beginning to feel faint in the heat, and I begin to walk over to the benches. Hunter and Lucian are kicking the ball around and JC sits next to me.

“Are you okay? You don’t look good.”

“I feel a little dizzy.”

“You need water. I’ll be right back.”

He jogs over to a cart in the corner where a man is selling drinks and ice cream. When he comes back, he has four bottles of water and hands me one, Lucian, and Hunter the others while keeping one for himself.

“Drink. You’ll feel better.”

I sip at the water, and gradually the dizziness fades. He puts his water bottle which is almost full on the back of my neck. It feels good. We spend the next several minutes talking and decide to go to lunch. There are a couple of nice small restaurants a few blocks away. JC slips his t-shirt on thereby ending my peep show.

Chapter 18

We walk to a small bistro that has tables outside on the street. I want to sit inside, but they all insist we remain, so I agree. The tables are small and made of green wrought iron and the patio is crowded. JC sits next to me and I’m sure that when his knee keeps hitting mine, it’s done on purpose since Lucian’s never touches me. I’m quite positive it’s no accident when his hand grips my lower thigh and begins to knead me. I dig my nails in his hand and he yanks it away, giving me a wounded look.

Lucian and Hunter are deep in conversation about sports, and I lean over and tell JC that was inappropriate.

“Remember, sexual harassment?” I whisper.

“I can’t help it,” JC whispers back.

I want to question him further, but it’s not easy in such close proximity to my fiancé’s brother. I sip at my water while trying to avoid JC’s gaze.

Fortunately, our lunch comes out though I’ve lost my appetite. My stomach is in knots. It’s nearing almost 2:00 PM, and I haven’t heard from Noah. This is becoming a habit. I know his daughter was in an accident, but it seems like since she came on the scene, his communication is lacking.

I pick at my Cobb salad, and JC gives me a hard stare. I know he’s worried because I’ve been skipping meals since I started working. It’s no big deal because usually I’ll make up for my lack of one meal for another. I want to tell him I had almost three slices of pizza last night. When the check comes, I dig into my pocket for some cash, but Lucian pushes the money away and ends up buying lunch for everyone.

“What’s going on tonight?” Lucian asks.

“JC and I are going out to a dance club in midtown. If you guys aren’t doing anything, you can join us. Megan said she might come.” Hunter says.

Hmm, my sister is getting chummy with JC and Hunter now that she is planning on moving to the city in a week.

“How come you know more about Megan than I do?” I said.

“You should’ve come out with us last night. Megan misses you.”

“I miss her, too.”

“I haven’t seen Megan for such a long time,” Lucian says.
