“This is Vivian and my daughter Rory.”

I smooth my dress and walk over to shake their hands. The picture I saw of Vivian didn’t do her justice. She’s stunningly beautiful and well-groomed, with soft gray eyes, high cheekbones and perfectly straight white teeth. Rory is the image of her except she has Noah’s blue eyes. They make quite a pair and I’m sure could turn heads when they walk down the street.

I immediately feel inadequate next to Vivian with my tawny blonde hair and light brown eyes. Nothing stands out on me compared to her.

“Noah’s told me a lot about you,” Vivian says.

“I hope it’s all good.”

I glance at him, and he’s got a strained smile across his face.

“Vivian and Rory came to the city to make final arrangements for her apartment. I thought we could have dinner with them if you’re up to it.”

I’m not. I just want to take a bath and relax, but now I need to entertain his daughter and, I guess Vivian is his ex-girlfriend or baby mama.

“Sure, where would you like to go?”

“How about French’s? You’re always talking about what great food they have.”

Seriously Noah! Why don’t we just pick the table in the back where JC got me off several times in the middle of the dinner crowd. But Noah has no idea the things we did in that booth. I wouldn’t dare tell him.

“Do you really want to go to mid-town on a Friday? French’s is probably going to be crowded.”

“I thought you could call Paul and see if he could get you in. After all, you do have an in since he’s the owner, and you’re friends.”

I sigh. “Let me call him.”

I go to the bedroom and dial Paul’s cell, sincerely hoping that he can’t accommodate us. I’m in no mood to change and travel for dinner. Unfortunately, Paul promises to give me a table for 7:30, which provides us with a little under an hour to get there. I let everyone know and head to the bedroom to change. Noah joins me a few minutes later.

“Lexi, are you upset with me?”

“A little advanced notice would have been nice.”

“I’m sorry. I was busy all day, and they showed up a couple of hours ago.”

So, you couldn’t text me and give me a heads up?

I stand in the closet in my bra and panties, deciding what I should wear. I’m not in the mood to dress up and I can go casual, but I don’t want to look like an old rag next to the stylish beauty queens. I select a pair of beige linen slacks with a black lace-trimmed silk camisole top. I realize I’m going to have to change my bra to strapless.

When I’m dressed, Noah saunters into the bedroom as I’m applying a fresh coat of makeup. He kisses my shoulders and runs his hand down my arm. I’m feeling heated, but that slowly disappears when I think about how annoyed I am with him.

“Ready to go?” he asks.

“Yes, let’s get this over with.”

“You say it like you’re going to your execution.”

“I’m sorry. I’m tired.”

“You can stay home if you’re not up to it?”

Hell no. And look like a bitch in front of your daughter and ex? No way. I need to assert my possessiveness over Noah from the start. I want this woman to realize that he’s my soon to be husband, not just the father of her daughter.

I take his hand, and we walk out of the bedroom together. Rory and Vivian are sitting on the couch and smile when we come out.

“You make such a lovely couple,” Vivian says.

“Thank you. Shall we head out?”
