Dinner goes better than expected. The restaurant is crowded, but Paul has come through and given us a great table in the back, the same table JC and I did inappropriate things. I’m embarrassed and my cheeks burn even though Noah is not aware of why.

“Babe, are you okay? Your cheeks are flushed. I hope you’re not getting sick.”

He launches into how proud he is of me for getting the director’s position at Barker and Lopez, which further embarrasses me. Vivian and Rory are gracious and offer their congratulations. I let them carry the conversation through the meal while I dig into my steak. I haven’t eaten since breakfast and I’m starved.

Paul comes by to chat and mentions I need to tell JC to stop by because he hasn’t seen him since we had lunch together. Noah scowls at me, and I realize I forgot to mention that we went out to lunch on my first day. I didn’t think it was a big deal since it was just to get acquainted with our working relationship.

I’m positive that after Vivian and Rory part ways with us, Noah will give me the third degree. I’m not looking forward to tonight. In the cab home, he doesn’t say anything, nor does he touch me. It’s a sure sign he’s pissed off about my lack of revelation.

When the cab pulls up to our building, I get out and go inside while he pays the driver. He places his hand firmly on my back when the elevator comes and steers me into the elevator. We can’t talk because there are other occupants, but as soon as we get into the loft, it’s on.

“Did you forget to tell me something?” he growls.

“Noah, it was a business lunch.”

“With your ex.”

“With my boss. It wasn’t like I was going to fuck him.”

“He wants you, and you encourage him.”

“Where the fuck is this coming from?”

“I saw you on Memorial Day weekend. You spent a lot of time with him.”

“Yeah, I did, while you were playing cards and getting drunk.”

I stalk off to the bedroom to change. Noah seems itching to continue the argument and follows me to the closet.

“You’re not going to let me forget that, will you?”

“It was so unlike you.”

“First off, let’s not get off subject. Why didn’t you tell me you had lunch with JC if it wasn’t such a big deal? Where did you go after?”

I turn with a shocked look on my face. Is he accusing me of cheating on him?

“Back to work. Do you think we went to a hotel room? I don’t understand why this is an issue now. It happened two weeks ago; can we move on?”

“Where else have you been with him?”

“Well, if you want to know, he helped me carry the groceries home today.”

“Why was he shopping with you?”

“He wasn’t. JC just happened to be there.”

“Don’t you think it’s coincidental? What else haven’t you told me?”

I think when JC came over for pancakes. If I tell Noah, he’ll lose it. He also doesn’t know t JC is getting a divorce. This would all be fuel for the fire, and I don’t want to add to it, so I keep quiet.

“You know everything. Why are you jealous all of a sudden?”

“It’s not all of a sudden.”

“So, you tell me you’re okay with me working for JC, but now you have doubts?”

“It’s not the working for him; I have a problem with.”
