JC smirks. “I thought we were friends?”
“We are, but at work, you’re still my boss and it’s inappropriate.”
“I promise to try to control myself. It’s not easy when I’m around you.”
I guess that’s the best he can do, but I’ll take it. I feel like he wants to test me to see how strong my resolve is.
“Megan asked about you yesterday,” I say.
“I thought she hated me.”
“She’s gotten over our breakup. She said she misses you.”
He lowers his voice. “You know she hooked up with Hunter before.”
“You knew?”
“You didn’t?”
“No, she just told me last night. I can’t believe it.”
“They always had chemistry. Didn’t you notice how they flirted with each other when we were together?”
“Yeah, but they were teenagers.”
“I caught them making out once. Hunter had his hand up her shirt.”
I scowl. “Why is it that I’m just finding out about this now?”
“I knew you’d be upset, so I didn’t say anything. Plus, I promised Hunter that I wouldn’t say anything.”
“Oh, that old bros before hoes?”
“Lexi, you’re hardly a ho.”
“I know, I’m just saying.”
We weave our way around people walking dogs, a pair of skateboarding teens and kids texting before we arrive at my building. JC hands the bags in his hand over to me. I kiss his cheek.
“Thank you for your help.”
“Enjoy your weekend.”
“Without Brianna, that won’t be hard. Call me if you want to hang out.”
I nod and head into my building. In the reflection of the glass door, I see him watching me as I go inside. When I get upstairs and unlock the door, I can hear a conversation going on, Noah’s voice and a woman I don’t recognize. I bring the groceries to the kitchen and start unpacking them. I don’t want to bother him if he’s with a client, so I keep quiet.
“Lexi?” he calls.
“Yes, Noah.”
“Can you come to my office.”
“Give me a minute.”
I put the last of the groceries away and go to his office, where I see two women with blonde hair sitting in front of his desk facing him. They turn as I enter.
